A 28-year-old man reportedly died while rescuing a child from a nullah in Ramabai Nagar area of Ghatkopar in eastern suburbs of Mumbai, the police said on Monday, reported the PTI.

The incident on Sunday afternoon, an official said.


He said that an eight-year-old girl entered the nullah to retrieve a ball and got stuck, and Shehzad Sheikh, a daily-wage labourer, jumped in the nullah to save her.


Sheikh managed to catch hold of the girl and passed her off to another man, but he got stuck in the silt and waste and sank, the official said, as per the PTI.

He said that the man was brought out with the help of the police and fire brigade and rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The police have registered an accidental death report (ADR), the official said.

5 killed, two injured as car falls onto dry riverbed in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra

Meanwhile, in an another incident, five persons were killed and two sustained injuries after their speeding car fell onto a dry riverbed in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district in the early hours of Monday, police said, reported the PTI.

The accident occurred near Khed around 5.45 am, when the vehicle first hit the divider and fell into the dry river bed of the Jagbudi River, an official said.

He said the car was heading towards Devrukh town from Nalasopara in Palghar district.

Three women and two men were killed, while two persons were injured, he said.

The official said the deceased were identified as Mitali Vivek More (43), Megha Paradkar (22), Saurabh Paradkar (22), Nihar More (19) and Shreyas Sawant (23), as per the PTI.

He said officials from the Khed police station rushed to the spot, and a rescue operation was conducted.

As the river was dry, the vehicle crashed into boulders, killing some of the occupants on the spot, he said, adding that the injured were undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ratnagiri.

A case is being registered at Khed police station, and further probe is underway, the official said, the news agency reported on Monday.
