Mumbai records highest Covid-19 cases in nearly three months

Mumbai on Wednesday reported 194 new coronavirus infections, the highest daily spike in cases since February 19, and the number of active cases in the city crossed the 1,000-mark, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.


But the country’s financial capital did not record any death on account of the virus. On Tuesday, the city had logged 158 COVID-19 cases and zero fatalities after reporting 74 cases on Monday.


In May so far, Mumbai has reported cases in three digits on 14 days but only three fatalities.


The number of active COVID-19 patients jumped to 1,002 from 932 on Tuesday. The number of recovered patients rose to 10,41,472 with 124 more patients getting discharged.

Mumbai has a recovery rate of 98 per cent. The overall growth rate of COVID-19 cases is 0.012 per cent between May 11 and 17. The caseload doubling rate/period is 5,450 days.

State count also rises

Maharashtra on Wednesday recorded 307 fresh coronavirus cases, the highest daily count since March 12, and one more death linked to the infection, while the number of patients under treatment spiraled to over 1,600, the health department said.

The state’s COVID-19 case tally rose to 78,81,542, while the death toll reached 1,47,856.

On Tuesday, the state had recorded 266 new cases and zero fatalities.

The sole fatality was recorded in Gadchiroli district. The state’s case fatality rate stands at 1.87 per cent.

The state has 1,605 active cases now. The districts of Satara, Sangli, Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalna, Latur, Hingoli, Osmanabad, Akola, Buldhana, Bhandara and Gondia have no active cases.

As many as 252 patients recovered since Tuesday evening, taking the tally of recovered patients to 77,32,081. The recovery rate stands at 98.10 per cent.
