Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning lashed several parts of Mumbai on Wednesday evening, bringing much-needed relief from the summer heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the city is likely to experience similar weather conditions, including moderate to heavy rainfall, on Thursday as well.
According to the latest Mumbai weather updates from the IMD, Mumbai is expected to remain under a cloudy sky with the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to heavy rain throughout Thursday, May 22. Daytime temperatures are forecasted to hover between 23 degrees Celsius in the morning and 32 degrees Celsius by the afternoon.
The IMD's Santacruz observatory in suburban Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 32.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 22.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory registered a high of 32.2 degrees Celsius and a low of 24.4 degrees Celsius, as per the latest Mumbai weather updates.
In its weather bulletin issued on Wednesday, the IMD placed Mumbai under a yellow alert until May 24, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall at isolated locations. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai also forecast gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph, along with lightning and heavy rain during this period.
Similar alerts have been issued for neighbouring districts. A yellow alert is in effect for Thane and Palghar districts, while an orange alert—indicating a higher level of concern—has been issued for Thane on May 23. The RMC has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in isolated areas on Friday.
Raigad district is also expected to face similar weather conditions between May 21 and May 23, with an orange alert issued for the area.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported heavy rainfall across several states from 8:30 AM IST on Thursday to 5:30 AM IST on Friday.
The data highlights heavy rainfall in regions including Gangetic West Bengal, Konkan & Goa, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Northeast India.
Konkan and Goa also experienced rainfall, with Panjim (North Goa) recording 9 cm, and both Mumbai (Santacruz) and Ratnagiri (Ratnagiri) registering 3 cm each.
Madhya Maharashtra's Solapur (Solapur) and Vidarbha's Nagpur (Sonegaon Airport, Nagpur) recorded 4 cm and 3 cm, respectively.
The IMD has forecasted continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the west coast, including Konkan & Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala, over the next few days.
