Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, on Tuesday, stated that Mumbai has reported a slight increase in Dengue cases in recent weeks. While the rise in cases is a cause for concern, it is essential to note that this increase can be partially attributed to an expansion in reporting units, they said.

According to the BMC data, in 2023, the number of reporting units increased significantly, surging from 22 to 880. These units include BMC dispensaries, BMC Hospitals, HBT clinics, additional private labs, and private hospitals. This expanded reporting network has enabled health officials to identify and report cases more comprehensively, shedding light on the actual disease burden within the city.

Key actions taken by the health authorities from September 1 to September 30, 2023, include:

  1. House-to-House Fever Survey: A massive effort was made to conduct fever surveys, covering 1,618,250 houses and surveying a population of 8,091,250 individuals. Additionally, 133,278 blood slides were collected for Malaria, and 11,750 individuals received prophylaxis for leptospirosis. Health camps were conducted, reaching a total of 173, and workplace interventions were carried out in 46 locations.
  2. House-to-House Survey for Waterborne Diseases: A total of 3,644 water samples were tested during this period. Moreover, 15,848 ORS packets were distributed for gastroenteritis, and 7,204 chlorine tablets were provided for water disinfection.
  3. Leptospirosis Control: Efforts to control leptospirosis included killing 935 rats through poison baiting and Celphos fumigation, trapping 3,249 rats, and employing Night Rat Killing (NRK) organisations to eliminate 19,645 rats.

Additionally, the report provided disease statistics for June through September 2023, highlighting the increasing cases of Malaria, Dengue, Gastroenteritis, Hepatitis, Chikungunya, and H1N1.

The civic authorities, for malaria control, inspected 21,041 houses, examined 58,475 breeding sources, and detected 2,059 Anopheles mosquito breeding sites. For control of Dengue, the authorities inspected nearly 1,223,395 houses, 1,307,619 containers were examined, and 16,843 Aedes mosquito breeding sites were identified. The authorities conducted 21,402 machine-filling operations, fogging a total of 60,071 building premises and 805,620 huts.

In light of the rising cases of Dengue and Malaria, health authorities issued advisories for prevention, emphasizing the importance of using mosquito nets, wearing complete clothing, maintaining clean surroundings to prevent mosquito breeding, and seeking immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms.
