After seven years of seeing it boarded up and closed off for coastal road work, citizens will soon be able to walk along the Worli Sea Face again. The 7.5-km walkway, developed by the BMC between Priyadarshini Park and the Worli end of the Sea Link, will be open to the public by mid-June.
A major part of the iconic stretch has been closed off since 2018 due to the construction of the coastal road between Worli and Nariman Point, during which time the civic body also constructed the promenade. Senior officials of the BMC confirmed the update: “Most of the work is completed, we are trying to open the promenade by mid-June. The promenade has been designed with 20 underpasses, placed every 400 metres. This will give easy access to pedestrians.”
This is part of the authorities’ plan to develop 70 hectares of open space on reclaimed land along the coastal road. BMC has decided to appoint a private company to develop this green zone and maintain it for 30 years. “The appointment of the private player to develop this area and maintain it is in its final stage,” the official added.
There’s more cause for cheer: the coastal road project also has mega parking lots at three underground locations. ”The parking facility near Tata Garden will accommodate 250 vehicles, the Lotus Jetty parking facility will accommodate 1200 vehicles, and two parking facilities at Worli will accommodate 200 vehicles each. Work on these parking lots will be completed soon and As the parking lot will be ready before opening of the promenade,” said the official.
