The accused was a family friend of the angadia, who was looted of Rs 1 crore last week
Vashi police, investigating a dacoity in which an angadia was abducted and a sum of Rs 1 crore taken from him, have said that they have arrested the mastermind behind this robbery, Fayyad Mohammad Altaf, 43. Altaf, who was nabbed from Karnataka, they said, had been planning the crime for the last two months.
Two days ago, three policemen were arrested with regard to the crime that was conducted last week. Mohammad Kajia, an angadia (unofficial courier), was travelling in a luxury bus from Mumbai to Mangalore on Saturday, and was abducted by a gang that included two sub-inspectors and a constable, and looted of the cash he was carrying. These three policemen, arrested by the Vashi police, were attached to the Tromboy police station.

The cops also alleged that the accused was the nephew of Kajia, who was in the business of delivering gold ornaments from Karnataka to Zaveri Bazaar. Altaf, his family friend and neighbour, was aware of his routine and that he usually carried massive amounts of cash. An officer from Vashi police station, requesting anonymity, said, "Altaf teamed up with his friend Afsar, who travelled to Mumbai in order to hatch a plan with his city-based friend, Uday Swami.” The accused also assumed that Kajia would never approach the cops, as usually angadias prefer to stay away from police since often hawala money is involved. “Uday roped in his brothers, Lakshman and Kamraj, and police constable Janardhar Raje, following which Raje convinced two other police sub-inspectors - Pankaj Khairnar and Nilesh Kumar Sandanshiv - to participate in the crime,” said the officer. The gang had been keeping an eye on the complainant and had followed him to Mahim, from where he picked up Rs 1 crore.
“Kamraj identified Kajia, and then police officials asked him to come with them to Uran. Once they took the money, they dropped him in the forest at Uran,” added the officer. Since the arrests, CP Ahmad Javed has asked Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Lohia (east region) to conduct an inquiry into the role of the police officers in the crime.
