The Shivajinagar police in Govandi have seized narcotics worth over Rs 6 crore during a house search, leading to the arrest of a 23-year-old man.

During the raid, police recovered 3 kg of mephedrone (MD) with an estimated street value of Rs 6 crore. Additionally, 12 kg of ganja worth Rs 2.4 lakh, 36 bottles of codeine phosphate syrup (commonly sold under the brand name Corex) valued at Rs 18,000, and Rs 1.3 lakh in cash were seized.

The arrested accused has been identified as Salman Izhar Shaikh, a resident of Raja Chowk in Baiganwadi, Shivajinagar. According to police, Shaikh had allegedly stored the contraband at his residence for the purpose of peddling. The matter came to light after police received a tip-off regarding Shaikh’s involvement in the drug trade. Acting on the information, officers conducted a raid at his home. While the source of the drugs and possible connections to a larger network remain under investigation, police suspect Shaikh may be part of a wider syndicate.

At the time of the raid, Shaikh was alone in the house. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and was remanded to police custody by the court for further investigation.

In January, the Mumbai police’s Zone VI division initiated the ‘Drug-Free Govandi’ campaign, aiming to eradicate drug-related activities across 10 police stations, including Shivajinagar. The initiative emphasised community involvement through corner meetings and a 24x7 helpline, leading to the arrest of over 65 individuals and the seizure of drugs worth Rs 24 lakh.
