A 14-year-old girl’s brother and uncle conspired and murdered the Mumbai-based man with whom the teenager had eloped. Crime Branch officials solved the murder case with the arrest of three men from Dahisar yesterday.

On Saturday, Mumbai police officers received a call from the Ghansawangi police station, informing them of the discovery of an unidentified body. The victim’s pocket bore a visiting card of a Dahisar-based man.

A team of officers went to the spot and recovered the body. Based on the details on the visiting card, the officers began inquiring if any man had gone missing from the area. “We did not find any missing man, but we did find a missing complaint of a 14-year-old girl,” said API Manohar Harpude, from Crime Branch unit 11.

The cops also learnt that a man named Vishnu Rathod had suddenly disappeared from the locality. It emerged that Vishnu’s sister was married to the missing girl’s brother, and the two were based in the same area.

“After getting this information, we tracked the movements of the missing girl’s brother, who was identified as Subhas Chauhan (25). We then learnt that Chauhan had been at Jalna on October 27,” said Harpude.

The cops then alerted their informers to find out whether Chauhan and his associates, Hari Bhau Chauhan (62) and Vilas Uttan Pawar (28), were in Dahisar on Saturday.

“We found out that the three people who had registered a missing complaint for Chauhan’s sister had also been missing on the day of the murder. We nabbed the three and began inquiries,” said API Chimmaji Adav from unit 11.

Upon interrogation, Chauhan confessed that he, his uncle and a friend had planned to kill Rathod after the man eloped with his sister.

Chauhan told the police that Rathod had taken the girl to Jinthur on October 20, and had been staying with her. Chauhan registered a missing person case on October 20. A week later, a distant relative informed Chauhan about Rathod’s location.

“Chauhan and his uncle then planned the murder. They called Rathod to meet them at Ghansawangi on the pretext of preparations for a wedding. Once Rathod arrived, the three killed him and chopped his body into pieces with a sword,” said a Crime Branch officer. The police have arrested the three on murder charges.
