Lok Sabha polls a fight between dictatorship and democracy: Uddhav

The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday said the Lok Sabha elections 2024 are a fight between dictatorship and democracy, reported the PTI. Addressing a campaign rally in Parbhani city of Maharashtra for Shiv Sena (UBT) nominee and sitting MP Sanjay Jadhav, Uddhav Thackeray targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on a host of issues including dynastic politics, as per the PTI. "This election in Parbhani is not local. This is a fight between dictatorship and democracy," he said. Sanjay Jadhav is pitted against Mahadev Jankar of Rashtriya Samaj Paksha, who is the joint candidate of the Mahayuti alliance of the Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, BJP, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, and Panjabrao Dakh of the Prakash Ambedkar's Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) from Parbhani Lok Sabha constituency. Uddhav Thackeray alleged that ministers in the Maharashtra cabinet are disrespecting women by using foul language on television channels, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah keep mum, according to the PTI. "They call Shiv Sena 'nakli' (duplicate) but they don't utter a word when a minister from Marathwada region (Abdul Sattar), who is sitting with BJP, uses abusive language against women," he said, the news agency reported on Tuesday. Since BJP knows that PM Modi's face will not attract votes in Maharashtra, they are using the face of Bal Thackeray and trying to fool people, he alleged. "People will decide whether they want dynasts or not, but when they (BJP) talk about political dynasties of Opposition parties, we will talk about the politics of monopoly," Uddhav Thackeray added, the PTI reported. In a jibe at BJP, Uddhav Thackeray said a new "season" (episode) has started on OTT platforms called "Jumla 3". "Earlier, two seasons came in 2014 and 2019 (referring to elections) and the third one is 2024. Actors, villains, and story writers are the same. How many times such seasons are to be seen? It should be stopped. They have spoiled the entire country and Maharashtra," Uddhav Thackeray said. Maharashtra's Parbhani will vote in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 on April 26. BJP won't let Congress touch CAA, no question of changing Constitution: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the Modi government will never change the Constitution or scrap reservations for Dalits, tribals and OBCs, and asserted as long as the BJP is around, it will not allow the Congress to touch the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Shah noted the BJP-led government used its majority in Parliament to nullify Article 370 (which provided special status to J&K), end terrorism and ban the practice of instant triple talaq, and accused the opposition of creating a false narrative that the saffron party will change the Constitution if it wins more than 400 Lok Sabha seats. Addressing an election rally in Akola in eastern Maharashtra in support of BJP candidate Anup Dhotre, the BJP stalwart accused the Congress and its allies of putting hurdles in the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. It was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who ensured that a grand and magnificent temple dedicated to Lord Ram was built in Ayodhya, he said. Referring to the traditional 'Kavad Yatra' taken out annually in Akola by Lord Shiva devotees, Shah said likewise Modi has embarked on a journey for the country's development. The BJP's star campaigner sought votes for a third term in office for Modi and said during his next tenure, India will become the third largest world economy, a status which will benefit all sections of society. Shah attacked Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge over his statement questioning relevance of BJP leaders talking about the Article 370 revocation in states like Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The Modi government, by removing Article 370, has integrated Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country, emphasised the home minister. For 70 years, the Congress "pampered" Article 370 like an "illegitimate child" and it was Modi who repealed the decades-old constitutional measure in August 2019, he opined. Further attacking the grand old party and NCP founder Sharad Pawar, who was a minister in the UPA government (2004-14), Shah stressed they failed to effectively tackle terrorism emanating from Pakistan due to vote-bank politics. However, when Pulwama and Uri terror attacks took place, the BJP government launched surgical and airstrikes to counter terrorism and send out a strong message, noted the home minister. Shah maintained the Congress wants to bring back Article 370 and restore the practice of instant triple talaq if they come back to power, but "we will not allow this to happen". He lashed out at Congress leader and former Union minister P Chidambaram over his comments on revoking the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) if the opposition INDIA bloc assumes power. "Chidambaram and the Congress party say they will scrap the CAA. However, as long as the BJP is around, it will not let the Congress even touch the CAA," Shah asserted. The CAA, enacted by the BJP-led government in 2019, seeks to grant citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim immigrants, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians, from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who entered India before December 31, 2014. Shah said the Modi government, on returning to office after the Lok Sabha polls, will bring citizens above 70 years under the ambit of the free health insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh and supply cooking gas cylinders directly to consumers. The BJP leader alleged the Congress is spreading lies that the Modi government will scrap reservations for Dalits, tribals and OBCs in jobs and education if it comes back to power with 400-plus Lok Sabha seats. The Modi government is in power for the last ten years, but it has used its parliamentary majority to repeal Article 370, counter terrorism, ban instant triple talaq and bring CAA, he maintained. "The Modi government will never change the Constitution or scrap reservations for SCs/STs/OBCs," the BJP leader told the gathering in Akola, where voting will take place on April 26 in the second phase. Shah lauded the 'Mahayuti' government in Maharashtra, saying they have done mega development works in the last few years. He said the BJP, which is part of the ruling coalition in the state, is determined to increase irrigation facilities in Vidarbha. Shah highlighted the Rs 89,000-crore Painganga interlinking project, which will bring about 4 lakh hectares of land in Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Yavatmal, Akola and Buldhana districts -- all located in Vidarbha -- under irrigation. The BJP veteran asked former Union minister Sharad Pawar what the "Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan government" gave to Maharashtra during its 10-year rule. The NDA government at the Centre gave Rs 7.14 lakh crore to Maharashtra in the last 10 years, while the Congress-headed dispensation provided only Rs 1.91 lakh crore to the state during its rule from 2004 to 2014, he added. Shah targeted the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which comprises the Congress, the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the NCP (SP), saying they cannot do any good for Maharashtra, and asked electors to vote for the BJP and bring it back to power at the Centre. BJP will be wiped out in south India, its seats to get reduced in north: Aaditya

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be wiped out in south India and its seats in the Lok Sabha elections 2024 will be reduced to half in the northern parts of the country, reported the PTI. Aaditya Thackeray said that it appears that the first phase voting was good for the opposition INDIA bloc. The first phase of the polls took place on April 19. "The BJP will be wiped out in the south and its seats will be reduced to half in the north," Aaditya Thackeray told reporters in Pune district of Maharashtra, where he accompanied the Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Maval Lok Sabha constituency candidate Sanjog Waghere Patil, who filed his nomination form, according to the PTI. Aaditya Thackeray said that the BJP had given an offer to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and 39 lawmakers to join them or face jail. Aaditya Thackeray also accused CM Eknath Shinde of taking Maharashtra backwards. Hitting out at the BJP, he said that when the party appears to be losing, it speaks the language of Hindu-Muslims and caste equation. INDIA bloc will win more than 300 seats in Lok Sabha elections: Uddhav Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday claimed the opposition INDIA bloc will win more than 300 seats in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, reported the PTI. Addressing a rally in Buldhana for Shiv Sena (UBT) nominee Narendra Khedekar, Uddhav Thackeray said the ruling party (BJP) will be taught a lesson by the people for calling his party "nakli" Shiv Sena, as per the PTI. Uddhav Thackeray targeted the BJP-led Central government over the GST regime and agricultural policies. He said farmers are paying an 18 per cent GST on fertilisers. This translates into the payment of Rs 18,000 GST for fertilisers worth Rs 1 lakh whereas under the Namo Sanman Yojana, farmers get (financial assistance of) Rs 6,000, he said. Uddhav Thackeray said that the BJP claims to have finished him (politically) but still targets him every day. "You call my party 'nakli' (duplicate) Shiv Sena, but this same Sena will show you its real strength. Is my Shiv Sena like your degree that you call nakli? The people will show you your place," he added. Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had dubbed the Uddhav Thackeray-led party a "nakli" Shiv Sena, according to the PTI. (with PTI inputs)

MSRTC depot manager arrested for taking bribe from driver in Latur

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested the depot manager of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) in Latur district of Maharashtra for allegedly accepting a bribe from a driver to process his application for leave encashment, an official said on Tuesday, reported the PTI. According to the PTI, the ACB laid a trap and caught the suspect who has been identified as Balaji Adsule, while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from the complainant on Monday, he said. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against the accused, and a probe has been initiated, the official said. Revenue official arrested by ACB for taking bribe Meanwhile, in an another incident in March, the Anti-Corruption Bureau had nabbed a revenue official in Maharashtra's Navi Mumbai for allegedly seeking and receiving a bribe over land records, according to an official statement issued earlier by the ACB. Shivraj Mhetre, deputy superintendent of police of the ACB's Navi Mumbai unit, told PTI that the suspect identified as Kiran Arjun Gore (48), works as a revenue assistant in the Panvel tehsil office. Kiran Gore allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from an individual to assist in the conversion of two ancestral land holdings from Category II to Category I under the Bombay Tenancy and Agricultural Lands Act. However, after talks, the bribe was lowered to Rs 80,000, reported PTI.  According to a PTI report, the complainant, unwilling to bribe, reported the incident to the ACB, causing them to set up a trap. Consequently, Kiran Gore was detained allegedly while taking Rs 40,000 as part of the agreed-upon bribe payment. A case was registered against Kiran Gore at the Panvel police station in Maharashtra under the Prevention of Corruption Act, the PTI report had last month stated. In February, two government officials were arrested in Maharashtra's Raigad district for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 25,000, an official had earlier said, reported the PTI. Maharashtra: Ajit Pawar's son Parth Pawar gets Y-plus security cover

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's son Parth Pawar, has been provided with 'Y-plus' category security cover, a top official of the Pune police said on Tuesday, reported the PTI. Parth Pawar is Ajit Pawar-led NCP's Baramati Lok Sabha seat candidate Sunetra Pawar, the wife of Ajit Pawar. Meanwhile, Sunetra Pawar filed her nomination for the Maharashtra Lok Sabha elections 2024 on Thursday. The Baramati seat has been considered the bastion of the Pawar family, with Supriya Sule winning the last three Lok Sabha elections from the seat. The Mahayuti candidate Sunetra Pawar accompanied by her husband and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar offered prayers at the Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple, in Pune earlier on Thursday. Before the filing of Sunetra Pawar's nomination, a campaign rally was held by the ruling 'Mahayuti' constituents - Shiv Sena led by CM Shinde, BJP and Ajit Pawar-headed NCP. Addressing the rally, CM Shinde said a change is inevitable in Baramati and gave the slogan - "Abki baar, Sunetra Pawar", according to the PTI. Parth Pawar, who unsuccessfully contested the Maval Lok Sabha seat in 2019 against the undivided Shiv Sena's sitting MP Shrirang Barne, is actively campaigning for his mother Sunetra Pawar. While talking to PTI, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said the decision about providing the Y-plus security cover was taken by the state government. A local functionary of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said the security cover has been provided to Parth Pawar due to security concerns. "Parth Pawar is reaching out to people as part of the election campaign for his mother. He is an aggressive leader and there were concerns surrounding his security as he moves around in remote areas," he said, according to the PTI. Y-plus security cover, the fourth highest level of security, typically includes an 11-member crew with one or two commandos. Reacting to the development, Parth Pawar's cousin Rohit Pawar who belongs to the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, alleged that Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadanvis was giving a priority to providing security cover to the political leaders' children, MLAs and actors while neglecting the safety concerns of the common man who face harassment from anti-social elements, as per the PTI. Rohit Pawar also said sarcastically that two tanks should be deployed to provide security to Parth Pawar. (with PTI inputs)

Vehicles used in Viksit Bharat Yatra now being used by BJP: Sena (UBT) leader

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve on Tuesday alleged that the vehicles used earlier by the government for the 'Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra' were now being used by the ruling BJP to run the party's campaign in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024, reported the PTI. The Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra legislative council was addressing a press conference in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. "The vehicles used in spreading government schemes under 'Vikasit Bharat Yatra' are now being used by BJP for election campaign. Is this 'Chanda do, dhanda lo'?" he asked, as per the PTI. "Even the routes of these vehicles are the same as they followed during the Viksit Bharat Yatra," he claimed, according to the PTI. Ambadas Danve also targeted Maharashtra's ruling Mahayuti alliance (of BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP) for fielding minister Sandipan Bhumre from the Aurangabad Lok Sabha seat. "Mahayuti leaders are now talking to Vinod Patil and trying to convince him not to contest elections," he said, the news agency reported on Tuesday. Vinod Patil, who wanted to contest elections as a Mahayuti candidate, was denied a ticket. He has now expressed his intentions to fight as an independent candidate. Ambadas Danve demanded that the security cover provided to 40 MLAs of the ruling Shiv Sena should be removed. "The state government has issued security to 40 MLAs who are in the Eknath Shinde-led faction. They don't need it at all. No one is going to harm them. Instead, MLAs like Sada Sarvankar, Santosh Bangar, Sanjay Gaikwad have misbehaved with people," he said, the PTI reported. Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Chandrakant Khaire and Maharashtra Minister Sandipan Bhumre on Monday filed their nomination papers from the Aurangabad seat for Lok Sabha elections 2024, reported the PTI. Former Maharashtra Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray took part in the procession taken out by Chandrakant Khaire before filing his nomination papers. Talking to reporters at Chikathana Airport, Aaditya Thackeray said that people of the country are with the INDIA alliance formed by the opposition parties. Police held maoist with Rs 1.5 lakh bounty during Lok Sabha Elections 2024

During the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, the Maharashtra Police caught a known Maoist, Dilip Motiram Pendam, 34, who had a Rs 1.5 lakh bounty on his head. Pendam was apprehended in the Bhamragad region while suspiciously wandering among villages and woodlands. Pendam is suspected of several crimes, including laying a fatal claymore mine and two pressure cooker bombs in Nelgunda-Gongwada and Laheri in March 2023. These acts were intended to attack security forces members and steal their guns and ammo, the IANS report stated.  The report added that Pendam is also accused of assisting other hardline Maoist factions in the region by organising logistics and ration supplies, as well as distributing propaganda literature to the local population. Since January 2022, the Gadchiroli police have apprehended 78 Maoists, including numerous women. They have pushed other rebels to hand over their weapons and join the national and social mainstream, the report stated.  Meanwhile, in order to increase voter turnout, police in the Naxal-affected district of Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, have launched a public awareness campaign ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. According to ANI, the campaign aims to educate locals about the importance of voting and to achieve 100% voter turnout in the area. To ensure a peaceful polling process, a large police presence has been deployed in the area. Authorities have advised individuals, particularly those in Naxal-affected areas, to use their right to vote fearlessly. Sub Inspector Govind Khating emphasised the campaign's goal, saying, "The awareness campaign strives to urge voters to do their democratic duties. "The upcoming elections on April 19 will be a victory for democracy." He also emphasised the use of a large police force to ensure secure and efficient voting. Khating expressed anxiety about Naxal threats, saying, "People fear potential blasts or attacks by Naxalites if they go to vote." To address these fears, police officers have been stationed to protect voters, particularly those affiliated with the government, thereby expediting the voting process. The community has responded positively to efforts to facilitate home voting for seniors and people with disabilities (PwDs). Khating went on to say, "We are receiving significant support from the people, who are cooperating with our initiative." Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police, Neelotpal, emphasised the importance of voting, saying, "For the past 15 days, the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been urging everyone in Gadchiroli to vote without fear." The police are constantly raising awareness about the importance of voting and urging everyone to participate. Maharashtra, with 48 Lok Sabha seats, has significant electoral power. The state will hold the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 in five phases, from April 19 to May 20, with the results released on June 4.

Atishi says Arvind Kejriwal not being given proper medical care in jail

Delhi Minister and AAP leader Atishi spoke out on Monday, claiming that the recent court verdict confirms Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's insufficient medical care while in judicial custody in Tihar jail. According to Atishi, the ruling from Rouse Avenue Court suggested that Kejriwal did not receive enough medical care while in detention for the past 22 days. She emphasised the importance of establishing a medical board comprised of a professional diabetic doctor, a diabetologist, and an oncologist to monitor Kejriwal's care, the ANI report added.  "The verdict of Rouse Avenue Court proves that for the last 22 days, Arvind Kejriwal was not getting proper medical care in judicial custody in Tihar Jail," she told ANI.  According to the report, in a veiled critique of the BJP, Atishi emphasised Kejriwal's ongoing battle with severe diabetes and emphasised the significance of early medical attention. She expressed optimism that once formed, the AIIMS medical board will immediately review Kejriwal's condition and take proper action to address his health concerns. "So this makes it clear that despite having such severe diabetes for 22 days, despite his sugar level being above 300, despite his request for isolation, he was not getting proper medical care. So we hope that the medical board of AIIMS, which will have specialist diabetes doctors, will be found today itself, will check upon Arvind Kejriwal and will start the process of insulating him from today itself," Atishi was further quoted as saying in the ANI report.  Meanwhile, the Rouse Avenue Court denied Kejriwal's request for rapid insulin injections and daily video conference sessions due to his acute diabetes and changing blood sugar levels. Instead, the court instructed AIIMS to convene a medical board to assess Kejriwal's health, the ANI report further stated. Reportedly, the court's ruling states that, while Tihar Jail authorities would continue to be in charge of Kejriwal's overall medical care, the AIIMS medical board, which includes prominent endocrinologists and diabetologists, will permit specialised consultations. "Though it shall continue to be the primary duty of Tihar Jail authorities, who are stated to be fully equipped to take care of the health of the applicant, to ensure that all requisite medical treatment is provided to him in jail, however, in the event of any requirement for specialized consultation, the jail Authorities shall consult the Medical Board to be constituted by Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), comprising of a senior endocrinologist, diabetologist, as per the request made on April 20, already sent by DG Prisons," said the Court per ANI report.
