Dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar was on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment for the gruesome murder of their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj
A special CBI court delivered the verdict, five years after the chilling incident that shook the nation. Lawyers of the distraught couple, who were immediately taken back to the Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad district, said they would appeal in a higher court against the ruling.
Earlier, the CBI sought death penalty for dentist couple. Public prosecutor R K Saini said the case comes under the "rarest of rare" category as daughter Aarushi and Hemraj were found dead with their throats slit at the Talwar residence in Noida in May 2008. Counsel for the Talwars sought leniency from the court.

On Monday, a special CBI court held both of them guilty of the sensational double murder.
Right after the judgment yesterday, the Talwars said in a statement that they were "deeply disappointed". "We are deeply disappointed, hurt and anguished for being convicted for a crime that has not been committed. We refuse to feel defeated and will continue to fight for justice," they said.
The couple was taken to the Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad yesterday and kept in separate cells with high security.
Judge Shyam Lal in his written order compared them to "freaks in the history of mankind where the father and mother became the killer of their own progeny."
Rajesh has been convicted under the Indian Penal Code Sections 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender), 203 (giving false information in respect to an offence committed), 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), while his wife Nupur has been found guilty under Sections 201, 302 and 34.
The case was initially investigated by Uttar Pradesh Police, however, a fortnight after the murders, the case was handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) May 31, 2008.
The charges against the couple were framed May 25, 2012, and the trial began after that.
The CBI case is based purely on circumstantial evidence because of the lack of direct evidence against the two accused.
During the trial, the agency maintained that murders were committed by the two accused as no outsider seemed to be involved. Of the four persons present at the L-32 house, two were found murdered, the agency said.
CBI lawyer R.K. Saini maintained that there was no proof of any outsider's entry, the scene of crime had been heavily dressed up, Aarushi's body had been tampered and Hemraj's body was concealed on the terrace of the flat.u00a0
