The woman bank official was left paralysed on her right side after the attack, as police intensified its hunt today for the assailant whose gory act caught on CCTV footage sparked an outrage.

"The incident occurred when the assailant hit the victim, Jyothi Uday, a manager in the Corporation Bank's Mission Road branch, on the head with a machete inside her bank's ATM kiosk and left her bleeding before disappearing with her cash (Rs.2,500) and mobile," Deputy Commissioner of Police D.C. Rajappa told IANS.

She was rescued by passers-by who noticed blood spilling on the road from inside the kiosk, whose shutter was pulled down by the assailant after the attack.

No security guard was present at the kiosk when the incident took place.

The victim, who is currently recovering from a "long surgery" is able to speak, Dr N K Venkataramana, who performed the operation at the BGS Global Hospital, told reporters, a day after the attack.

He said her skull was fractured and a small piece of bone had gone into the brain, causing a "penetrating injury" and added that she had been paralysed on her right side.

"We have taken all precautions and are closely monitoring her condition. Hope everything will go well... she is able to speak", the doctor said. There was no danger to her life now, he said. u00a0

Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar, who visited the victim, said she was recovering and speaking. He said police officials were being sent to different districts and states to track down the assailant, "who cannot be a first timer".u00a0

Auradkar said police had two rounds of meetings with banks on the issue of security at ATM booths earlier and given strict guidelines to them.

The CCTV camera footage, obtained by the police from the bank, shows the unmasked assailant entering the kiosk when Jyothi was before the ATM to draw cash, and threatening her after pulling down the shutter from inside.

The ATM kiosk is located on the ground floor of the LIC building diagonally opposite the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike head office in the Corporation Circle and a furlong from the Ulsoor Gate police station.
