The district election department is baffled, unsure whether or not there's a need to attach printers to Electronic Voting Machines for generating printouts after every vote is cast.

Chances are that the central election commission (CEC) may ask all polling booths to secure printouts after each vote as proof, in case there are allegations of EVM tampering.u00a0

Sources in the district election department claim that such instructions are likely to be issued before general elections in 2014. Currently, the district election department (DED) is conducting the first-level checking of EVMs and mock polls. However, as the DED is yet to receive any notification from the CEC in this regard, the officials here were flummoxed on the issue of printouts.

“So far no such instructions have been issued to introduce this system in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, but such a possibility can’t be ruled out,” said deputy district election officer Apurva Wankhede.

While addressing a press conference two years ago (2011), the then chief election commissioner S Y Quraishi had mentioned that an expert committee had been formed for adopting the new technology in the EVMs.

He also pointed out that the political parties had already been consulted on the matter. Back in the district, over the past month, DED officials, along with a team of experts from Hyderabad were busy checking the EVMs to make sure they have not been tampered with.

“The work is finishing today (Friday). In the mock poll, we printed a NOTA (none of the above) symbol on the ballot paper, as we had received a notification from CEC well in advance. However, the status of securing printouts of ballot papers is still unclear,” said Wankhede.u00a0
