Mumbai Rains: Aaditya Thackeray, BMC chief and Mayor visit affected areas

After extremely heavy and continuous rainfall throughout the night, several areas in Mumbai have been flooded. The weather department has sounded a red alert in city and neighbouring districts for 'extremely heavy rainfall' today and tomorrow. The BMC has issued an alert to all concerned departments and also to citizens to not go near any beach or low lying areas. Education officers have been told to keep the BMC schools prepared if any emergency situation arises and people need shelter.

    House collapses in Santacruz: Woman, her 2 children missing

    Two houses next to a nallah collapsed in suburban Santacruz. One woman and three girls from one of the houses fell in the open nallah, out of which one girl has been rescued. The search operation is in progress.

    “One team of NDRF moved for operations at 14.40 hrs after rooms of a residential chawl collapsed at Agripada, in Dhobighat area of Santacruz,” says National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Two fire engines and one ambulance are at the spot.

    Fire brigade, pumping stations put on alert

    BMC issued suitable warnings and advisories to all coastal security agencies, disaster management department and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST). The city corporation has also put on alert fire brigade, pumping stations, and operating staff at temporarily installed 299 pumping machines. Officers have also been put on alert in case evacuation is required when the water level of the Mithi river increases due to rains.     Mumbai received 230.06 mm rain from 8 am on Monday to 6 am today. The eastern and western suburbs recorded 162.83 and 162.28 mm of rain respectively. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also warned of strong winds off north Maharashtra coast today, tomorrow and on Thursday.
