Born in New Zealand, Ben Stokes is the son of rugby league player and coach Gerard Stokes. He moved to England at a young age after his father was appointed head coach of Workington Town rugby league club. He grew up in the small, West Cumbrian town of Cockermouth, where he played cricket for the Cockermouth Cricket Club. Stokes went on to win the North Lancashire & Cumbria Cricket League, Premier Division Title with the club in 2006 as a 15-year-old. Gradually, he made his way into domestic cricket and soon made his mark in international cricket and has never looked back. As of 2013, his parents have moved back to New Zealand, while Ben resides in England
On 25th September 2017, Ben Stokes was involved in a brawl in Bristol and charges were pressed against him over the fracas. The incident took place just hours after England had played a one-day international against the West Indies in the city

On the night of the brawl, allegedly, Ben Stokes offered the club's door supervisor Andrew Cunningham £60, then £300, for entry, and became abusive when this was refused, the court heard. Two gay men, Kai Barry and William O'Connor, emerged from the nightclub and began talking to Stokes, 27, and Hales.
Following this, Ben Stokes allegedly got into a brawl. A fight ensued and a 27-year-old man allegedly suffered a fractured eye socket and a bloody nose and Ben Stokes was identified as the main aggressor. Following the incident, Stokes lost his England vice-captaincy and also his place in the team for the Ashes tour. He was charged with affray for the brawl but recently, in a court verdict, he was found not guilty and he returned to the England squad for the ongoing series against India
A prosecutor, described Ben Stokes as being "provocative and offensive" and in an "angry state of mind" before the alleged fight. The sportsman had been in Bristol, staying in a hotel with the England cricket team, and was in the Mbargo nightclub from about 11:30 pm on September 24. He left the club with teammate Alex Hales at 12:46 am, with the pair returning and trying to re-enter at 2:08 am. Jurors were told Mbargo, as part of its licencing conditions, is unable to allow entry to additional customers after 2 am
In his ongoing hearing, the victim of Stokes’ fury, Hale said "I'm a dad. He could have killed me. I don't know why he didn't stop. "He could have beaten the living hell out of me. It's shocking to see someone doing that to someone who didn't do anything wrong”. On the other hand, Ben Stokes has been having nightmares ever since.
