On the occasion of Gudi Padwa, the Maharashtrian New Year, thousands of men and women came out to celebrate the beginning of the New Year, which signifies the welcoming of the spring and falls on the first day of the month of Chaitra according to the lunar calendar.

During the festival of Gudi Padwa, people decorate their houses with rangoli and prepare special delicacies such as shrikhand, chana ussal, thalipeeth, etc. A puja is performed in the morning and the Gudi, which is a flag, is decorated with flowers, mangoes and neem leaf with an upturned silver or copper vessel.
