    On December 20, 2018, Hamid Ansari returned home after spending 6 years in a Pakistani jail. Ansari was detained by Pakistan's intelligence agencies back in 2012 and subsequently was sentenced to three year's of imprisonment by a military court in 2015 for possessing a fake Pakistani identity card. He had entered Pakistan from Afghanistan, reportedly to meet a girl whom he had befriended online.

    Hamid Ansari, a 33-year-old Jogeshwari resident and a software engineer by profession was lodged in the Peshawar Central Jail after being sentenced by the military court on December 15, 2015. His three-year jail term ended on December 15, but he was not able to leave for India as his legal documents were not ready. On December 20, 2018, the Peshawar High Court gave the federal government a month's deadline to complete his repatriation process.

    After landing in Delhi on December 17, 2018, Ansari's mother Fauzia told mid-day, "I have no words to say what the entire family has gone through in the past six years. I am thankful to the Indian media. Hamid has gone through a lot in the past six years, he was tortured by Pakistani agencies who thought he was an Indian spy. That is also why remission was denied by the Pakistani government in August this year. The only thing I want now for my son is that at least he should get a job."

    After landing in Mumbai, Hamid Ansari along with his mother Fauzia met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Dec 19, 2018, and narrated his ordeal. Officials said that Ansari became emotional while talking about the difficult phase of his life in Pakistan. He also thanked Swaraj and the Ministry of External Affairs for persisting with the case and taking it up with Islamabad.

Upon his return to Mumbai Hamid said, "After six years when I saw them (his family) I was still in Pakistan. They were crying and spreading their arms while Pakistani authorities were completing paperwork with me and I kept asking them to speed up. I just ran towards them (family) and fell on my knees, 'Ammi mujhe maaf kar de'. I was asking for forgiveness from everyone."
