The sweet filling inside a modak is made up of fresh grated coconut and jaggery, while the soft shell is made from rice flour, or wheat flour mixed with khava or maida flour, which can be fried or steamed.
Modaks have a special importance in the worship of Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chaturthi, as the sweet dumpling is believed to be his favourite food.
Innovative recipes for modaks have also been created, which include banana nachni modak, motichoor modak and chocolate modak among many others.
During Ganesh Chaturthi, the puja always concludes with an offering of twenty-one modaks to the deity and as prasad.
Cupcake modaks: Vanilla cupcakes topped with coconut-flavoured buttercream and filled with freshly-grated coconut with jaggery and brown sugar.

Chocolate fried modaks: Hot Mama Bakes has introduced modaks with a coconut filling mixed with chocolate, giving it the texture and taste of fudge. There's also a Nutella version with a gooey centre.

Paneer modaks: The versatile cottage cheese finds prominence in modaks created by Minnie Pooja of Madezze. The modaks come in flavours like custard, coconut, gulkhand, chocolate and kesar pista. The paneer is made using cow's milk so the modaks are low in fat and last 4 days.

Marzipan modaks: Add some 24 karat gold and 18 karat silver to your celebrations with marzipan chocolate modaks. These modaks are made using almonds imported from Iran, covered in Belgian chocolate and pure edible gold and silver; they are available in hampers too.
