Lockdown 4.0: Uddhav Thackeray urges people to donate blood, Maharashtra crosses 50k COVID-19 cases

    With a huge spike of 3,041 new COVID-19 cases being reported from across the state, the total number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra crossed the 50 thousand mark on Sunday. The state health department said that out of the 50,231 confirmed cases, 33,988 are active. Besides the huge spike, Maharashtra also recorded 58 deaths due to the infection, thereby taking the death toll to 1,635 in the state.

    On Day 7 of the extended lockdown till May 31, India witnessed the biggest ever spike of 6,767 positive cases, thereby taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 1,31,868, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said. The country recorded 147 deaths on Sunday, taking the toll to 3,867. Out of the total number of cases, 73,560 are active cases.

    With 50,231 COVID-19 cases, Maharashtra continues to remain the worst-affected state followed by Tamil Nadu with 16,277 cases and Gujarat 13,664 cases. The Health Ministry also said that the total number of recoveries stood at 54,440 as against 51,783 from Saturday taking the recovery rate to 41.28 per cent in the country.

    While addressing the state, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray gave a hint that the lockdown in the state will be extended beyond May 31. The Maha Vikas Aghadi leader also sought more time from the Civil Aviation Ministry to resume domestic air travel in the state as he urged people to come forward and donate blood as the state has stocks that will last for another 10-15 days.

    RTI activist Anil Galgali has appealed to CM Uddhav Thackeray to revoke the ban on the movement of taxis and auto-rickshaws in Mumbai amid total lockdown in the state. Galgali questioned the government about the lack of alternative transport arrangements for the citizens and said that BEST buses are transporting only essential workers while local trains and the Metro are not plying.

    A 73-year-old woman who was tested positive for COVID-19 was fully cured and was subsequently discharged and sent to home quarantine on May 20. The senior citizen was amitted at DNA Multispeciality Hospital in Kandivli on May 9 following respiratory distress and fever. The septuagenarian was later detected as coronavirus positive. Interestingly, the woman had no other co-morbidities except for the age factor.

    Shiv Sena MP Rajan Vichare wrote a letter to District Magistrate Rajesh Narvekar urging for him to provide free COVID-19 testing to the police staff at Thane prison. Vichare highlighted several instances where inmates have been found corona positive in different prisons. The Sena MP also demanded that other jail staff and suspected inmates should also be tested for COVID-19.

    In an untoward incident, a man died after he was attacked by his cousins for not getting tested for the novel coronavirus after his return from Delhi. According to reports, the deceased died due to head injuries. His sample was not collected for a coronavirus test by doctors during treatment. The police sources said that the deceased had undergone thermal screening when he reached Bijnor on May 19 from Delhi. However, as his report was negative so his sample was not collected.

    Telangana got its first mobile ICU for COVID-19 patients when a charity organisation developed a mobile intensive care unit equipped with two ventilators and three beds in a bus. Called MCICU, the mobile ICU has state-of-the-art facilities like ventilator, imaging, teleradiology, e-ICU, ultrasound and Artificial Intelligence-based risk stratification. Swab samples of the patients can also be collected in a contactless manner in the MCICU.

    Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said that the Delhi government has barricaded the containment zones and no relaxation has been given in these areas. He also said that people must wear facemasks, maintain social distancing and sanitise hands repeatedly to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Jain also said that the doubling rate in Delhi is 13 days.
