Pole dancing still has dubious connotations and is commonly associated with strip clubs, but Aarifa Bhinderwala from Mumbai, shattered all these myths by embracing her body and her love for the form of dance. All images/Instagram @aarifa.pole.burnt
Aarifa Bhinderwala became famous after a video profiling her and her love for pole dancing, went viral last year
Considering the fact that in India, Pole dancing is still considered taboo, Aarifa has busted several stereotypes by becoming one of the first women to practice and teach pole dancing in India
In January 2018, The Creative Indians profiled Aarifa and her love for pole dancing alongside greats like AR Rahman
In the video by the Creative Indians, Aarifa is seen performing on a pole with absolute ease -- like she is one with the apparatus, flowing with the music. This is when her statement "Music and the pole together feel like I have met my soul’s purpose" seems to come true in the form of her dance
The video also has her talking about her chidhood and how she happened upon pole dancing; and Aarifa talks about how as a child she loved spinning really fast and then stop so she could feel that dizziness
Aarifa also mentions that initially it was that dizziness that she loved but it later turned into a feeling of being at peace and in another zone
Aarifa mentions to the makers of Creative Indians, that today when she looks back at all the things she did as a child she relises that she was born to pole dance because she always had the innate skills -- She adds by saying that as she grew it became a reality, and soon a realization dawned that pole dncing was what she was supposed to do
When Aarifa talks about how her interest peaked for Pole Dancing, the video has her saying that she happened upon the class when she was in Perth, visiting her sister who had just had a baby.
Aarifa mentions that at that time she was pursuing a course in counselling and it was just one of those days where she was looking for something to do, and a pole dancing class seemed like something very interesting
In the video, Aarifa mentions that the thought that something like pole dancing could be taught in such a serious format was what lef ther in awe
Aarifa went to the class with no knowledge of pole dancing and wished to see that the art form was all about
In the video, Aarifa mentions that at first she pursued pole dancing because she thought it was cool. But as she honed her skills she fell in love with the art form. Infact she specifically mentions that it was when she first achieved her inversion upside down did she realise how cool and fun pole dancing is
The video has Aarifa talking about her love for pole dance and she mentions that as she kept honing her skill and learning more about the art form she realised that she has a particular ease with the apparatus. She adds that she has a particualr affinity for it, 'a connection with the apparatus'
Finally, as a closing to the video Aarifa says that the growth in the skill she has at pole dancing as an art form has been very organic. She learnt the dance, worked hard to hone her skills and today she teaches a class at Juhu, Mumbai
Today Aarifa is the founder of Pole Burnt, her pole dancing studio, where she teaches women to fall in love with their bodies and learn pole dancing
Aarifa's students are business women, doctors, homemakers and models and her oldest student is 49-years-old
