In an interview with mid-day Rujuta Diwekar revealed why one doesn't necessarily lose weight by sweating more and doled out tips on how to stay fit by working out regularly
Rujuta Diwekar said, "People usually exercise to stay fit but regular workouts also have anti-ageing benefits. One should be fit enough to age gracefully. Exercise also boosts your memory and brain activity. Moreover, exercise is not just a brainless activity but a science. Before and after working out, one needs to follow a pre-and post-workout meal, an often neglected but crucial aspect."
Rujuta Diwekar added, "People in India have a very skewed view of exercise. It is a highly misunderstood concept. People think they need to work out only to lose weight or feel they don’t need to exercise as they otherwise lead an active life. The human body is designed for activity. If you aren’t active, then your body will degenerate. Exercise is a non-negotiable activity. It is imperative to practice it to lead a healthy and meaningful life."
Rujuta Diwekar's advice for people who want to stay for is simple. She said, "I would suggest don’t ever take the easy way out to stay fit. Indulge in any cardio activity, weight training or do yoga the right way under proper guidance to get fit. All you need is 150 minutes of exercise throughout the week to stay healthy."
When it comes to eating right, Rujuta Diwekar believes 'Think Global, Eat Local'. Rujuta Diwekar believes that one should place importance on good health and fitness. Food wise, one should eat a balanced meal, and stuff that's good to taste. She said, "I would like to reiterate that our Indian traditional breakfast items are as healthy as cereals. It's just that they haven't been well marketed as cornflakes or muesli. Finally, the idea behind losing weight is to stay fit, and not to subscribe to fashion trends. It should be one's own prerogative."
Rujuta Diwekar also busts myths related to nutrition- the common being that calories are bad. She said, "How can we work if we don't have enough energy? And we get energy from these calories only. You often hear that carbohydrates should be avoided and that ghee is fattening. I would like to point out that some skinny girls also have a lot of fat in their bodies."
About cutting down sugar, Rujuta Diwekar said on her website, "Take the 100-day 'no sugar challenge'. Eat the chocolate but with the zero calorie sweetener."
Rujuta Diwekar's entire family practices yoga as a way of life and this was a big influence on her. She has formally studied Yoga and Vedanta along with Ayurved from Sivananda Yog Vedanta forest academy
