In 2017, a Ludhiana has issued a non-bailable warrant against the 38-year-old actor. Earlier, on April 3, a local court in Ludhiana, Punjab, had issued an arrest warrant against her and a two-member team of the Ludhiana police had subsequently left for Mumbai with the arrest warrant
The case dates back to 2016 when Rakhi Sawant allegedly made objectionable remarks against sage Valmiki, who wrote the mythological Hindu epic 'Ramayana' which has offended 'the religious sentiments' of the Valmiki community
Rakhi also claimed that ever since she made a comment drawing a comparison between singer Mika Singh and Valmiki last year, she had been receiving threats
Interestingly, when Punjab Police went to her residence, she was 'absconding'. Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner of Police Dharuman Nimbale on April 4 said that a police team which had gone to Mumbai to execute the arrest warrant against Rakhi was returning as it failed to find her at the given address.
Now, Rakhi has chosen to defend herself two days after a Punjab police team came to Mumbai to execute the arrest warrant against her. But they returned after failing to find her at the given address.
While Punjab Police had denied reports that actress Rakhi Sawant has been arrested, saying she was not found at her address in Mumbai. a spokesperson for the actress said she had surrendered. "Rakhi Sawant has not been arrested. Warrant of arrest has been issued against her by the court... A police team from Ludhiana went to Mumbai to execute the warrant, but she has not been arrested," Police Commissioner Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said.
Rakhi said when she heard about the case, she went to Bangur Nagar and Oshiwara police station here and asked for a warrant. However, the police 'denied any warrant' against her. The Bollywood starlet told in an interview, "I just gave an example of Valmiki ji that I have been reading in books since childhood... I didn't want to hurt anybody's sentiments."
Amid the ongoing controversy over her arrest, TV and Bollywood actress Rakhi Sawant called a press conference on April 6, 2017, in Mumbai to clarify the issue
Rakhi Sawant on April 6, 2017, claimed she never knew a case had been filed against her for a remark she made in reference to sage Valmiki, thereby adding a new twist to the ongoing controversy
Rakhi told the media that she is ready to go to jail if she is found guilty. "I got to know from the media that I have been arrested, there's a case filed against me, and a warrant issued. I didn't know that Punjab police is searching for me. I am shocked. I don't know anything. Police has not come to my house. I have not received any warrant. I don't even know that there is a case filed against me. If I am guilty, I am ready to go to jail."
In 2018, Narinder Adiya, the advocate who had filed a complaint against her before a court last year for hurting the sentiments of members of the Valmiki community, was also present. "I have a great regard and sincere respect for Bhagwan Valmiki ji. I was misunderstood," Rakhi told the community members. Aadia claimed that Rakhi has tendered a written apology in the court and the next date of hearing is May 18, 2018. Adiya had filed a complaint against Rakhi on July 9, 2017 claiming that her comments -- allegedly made in a programme on a private television channel last year -- had hurt the sentiments of the Valmiki community
Bollywood actress Rakhi Sawant, who had allegedly made derogatory remarks against Lord Valmiki on a private TV channel last year, tendered an apology in the presence of several members of the Valmiki community in Ludhiana. Here how the case unfolded
