IPL 2024, DC vs SRH: Hyderabad's terrific batting puts 266 runs vs Delhi

A terrific batting display from Sunrisers Hyderabad batsmen helps the side post 266 runs on board in the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals. The hosts now need to chase 267 runs in 20 overs. Opening the innings, Travis Head blasted 89 runs in just 32 deliveries. His knock was laced with 11 fours and 6 sixes. Followed by Abhishek Sharma who scored 46 runs in just 12 balls. During his knock, he smashed 2 fours and 6 sixes. The duo put on a partnership of 100-plus runs. Abhishek missed by just one run from registering the fastest-ever half-century in the history of the Indian Premier League. Also Read: T20 World Cup 2024 | "It would be greatest feeling to represent India": Karthik Facing 29 balls, Shahbaz Ahmed also smashed an unbeaten 59 runs. His unbeaten knock consisted of 2 fours and 5 sixes. Hyderabad's Heinrich Klaasen who is in great form in the IPL 2024 departed early against Delhi Capitals. His eight-ball innings ended with a score of 15 runs laced with 2 sixes. Nitish Kumar Reddy also accumulated some crucial runs. The right-hander played a knock of 37 runs off 27 balls which included 2 fours and 2 sixes. Kuldeep Yadav was the most successful bowler for Delhi. The spinner conceded 55 runs and bagged four wickets in four overs. Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar registered one wicket each to their names. Khaleel Ahmed, the left-arm seamer, whose career has been dogged by inconsistency, helped Sunrisers in getting a 'Head start' as the short balls were summarily dispatched over deep mid-wicket for sixes with 19 coming off the first over. On a track, where it required them to pitch it on a fuller length, all Delhi pacers bowled short as Head and Abhishek would just stand deep in their crease and make merry. (With PTI Inputs)

T20 World Cup 2024 | "It would be greatest feeling to represent India": Karthik

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik who has been in great form in the IPL 2024 is ready to play for India in the T20 World Cup 2024 if he gets a chance. The T20 World Cup 2024 is all set to begin next month in the USA and West Indies. He was also part of the Indian squad in the T20 World Cup in 2022. After his last international appearance, Karthik has been involved in commentary. Returning back to action in the IPL 2024, the right-hander has showcased extraordinary strokes and is striking the ball at a strike rate of 205 plus. He is also the third leading run-getter for RCB with 226 runs, behind Virat Kohli (361) and skipper Faf du Plessis (232). "At this stage in my life, it would be the greatest feeling for me to represent India. I'm very, very keen to do so. There is nothing bigger in my life other than representing India in this T20 World Cup," the RCB wicketkeeper-batters said ahead of the clash against KKR. Also Read: IN PHOTOS | IPL 2024: Indian players to impress so far! With Karthik also emerging as a contender, the wicketkeeper slot will be a hotly-contested one for which the Team India think tank may pick two at the most for the T20 World Cup 2024. Rishabh Pant, returning to the game after the accident has also shown some great signs while playing for Delhi Capitals. KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are also on the contention list. RCB wicketkeeper-batsman also said that he would respect whatever the Big Three (Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar) decides. "I also feel there are three very, very stable, honest people who are at the helm to decide what should be the best Indian team for the World Cup Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar. And I'm completely with them. I respect any decision that they take. But all I can say is I'm 100 per cent ready, and I'll do everything I can to be on that flight to the World Cup." Also Read: IPL 2024, DC vs SRH: Delhi Capitals wins the toss and elects to bowl Karthik further emphasised the importance of understanding his strengths as a player, focusing on precision rather than power-hitting like Andre Russell or Kieron Pollard. He said he analyses bowlers' patterns to strategise his shots, visualising scenarios during practice to enhance his batting repertoire."These days as a player, you need to understand your strengths. I'm not a Russell or a Pollard who can just mishit a ball and get a six for it, rather," said Karthik. Dinesh Karthik smashed 7 sixes and 5 fours during the run-chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024. "So, I need to understand how I can beat gaps, what sort of balls I can hit for boundaries. And I realised there was a certain pattern in which bowlers were bowling to me, so I needed to try and work out a solution for that. "Hence, when I practice, I try and understand, okay, if this is what they're going to bowl at me, how am I going to get a boundary, visualising a field that is going to be in place for me. "So, I worked like that, and I worked backwards, and that helped me, you know, really learn a couple of shots more, at the back end. It's been great to go out there and express myself, and it's been thoroughly enjoyable to do what I'm doing for RCB as a finisher," he added. (With PTI Inputs)

The 35th fixture of the IPL 2024 is underway at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has won the toss and elected to bowl first against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Delhiites will be high on confidence after securing a win in their previous IPL 2024 game against Gujarat Titans. Despite posting a humongous target, SRH has also been successful in defending it. Delhi's Jake Fraser-McGurk has so far impressed in his two IPL 2024 outings. IPL 2024: Brian Lara expresses views on MS Dhoni's batting position

The fans want MS Dhoni to bat up the order and even the CSK management would like to happen it that way. But the West Indies legend Brian Lara knows that Dhoni's ability to bat for more time is restricted due to a chronic knee problem and he won't consider the promotion in the batting lineup. Besides his knee issue, Dhoni is also providing other youngsters to prove their skills. "It's just brilliant. The question has to be asked would you like to bat higher? Because I can see he's making valuable contributions. But there are a couple of losing causes as well. So, I think that should be a consideration," Lara told Star Sports. The CSK legend Dhoni scored some crucial runs in the end during the IPL 2024 match against Lucknow Super Giants. He scored 28 runs in nine balls. Later, Chennai lost the IPL 2024 match by eight wickets against LSG. Lara added, "At 42, he's most likely thinking from the teams point of view, that the young guys got to do the job. But I think the middle of the innings told a little bit too much about CSK batting. And it created the fact that even though he exploded at the end and he did that Dhoni thing at the end and it still was not enough. Also Read: "I knew he would be a T20 legend": Gautam Gambhir praises Sunil Narine "So, I think they will have to go back to the drawing room. And realise that they need to be a little bit more aggressive throughout the innings. Because at the back end, you've got the man to come. "And if he gets two three overs, as he did against Mumbai Indians. And propelled them above 200. They need to think about that all the time." Lara also expressed his views about the moments when Dhoni came to bat in the IPL 2024 matches and about the cheers across different Indian venues. "That's the terrific part of the game. I've said it over and over again, when you have a guy aged 42, a legend, an icon in the game, someone who has played in the IPL for so many years and you don't know when he's going to say, hey, that's it. "He comes out to bat and I think it's just a moment to savour and everyone is just going to feel amazing about this. It's going to be a lot of emotions, but then he walks out and does the business," Lara said. "He may not have to look and say, 'listen, I may have to go up the order because I may need a little bit more runs'. He has batted five, six times now and remained unbeaten. So, any team strategising would say, 'well, obviously you have to go up'. But I don't think he will." CSK head coach Stephen Fleming said that the team is not surprised with the performances of Dhoni in the IPL 2024 as the skill level pre-season was very high. When the discussion turned to Dhoni's fitness and running between the wickets, Lara said, "He's still doing it today and let's make sure that he's on the park for all the matches in this IPL for CSK. "But yeah, running between the wickets where he is aware of the situation and aware of that the matchup for him is just the correct matchup. "And it just looked like when you look at the counter, there's two umpires, 11 fielders, and a bowler, and then there's these fans, and they all just look like spectators when he's striking the ball. "Fielders diving to his left, he can't get it, fielders looking his head, he can't get it. It's just his show. He's just scripted it so well." (With PTI Inputs)

Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Narine (Pic: File Pic)

"I knew he would be a T20 legend": Gautam Gambhir praises Sunil Narine

Former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir praised Sunil Narine by saying that he is perhaps the greatest bowler in IPL and he had a hint that Narine would develop as the T20 cricket legend when he saw him making an ODI debut against India in 2011. After seeing him during the debut series, Gambhir also revealed that he decided to add Narine to Kolkata Knight Riders.  "I must have faced seven or eight deliveries and I thought this is the guy who is going to go out there and become the legend of the game, especially in T20 cricket," Gambhir said in KKR Knights Dugout Podcast. "See where is Sunil Narine now? Probably the greatest bowler in IPL history," he said. Narine has taken 170 wickets in his IPL career and has also scored 1322 runs so far, including a century, from 168 matches he has played in the League. Narine made his debut against India in Ahmedabad. In the ODI match against Indians, the West Indian bagged two wickets including Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin for 34 runs. Also Read: Vengsarkar CA win Dream 11 Cup Gautam Gambhir faced Sunil Narine for the first time in the fourth ODI match between India and West Indies. In his six overs, Narine was unable to register a single wicket, but the Indian left-hander made up his mind to add Narine to the KKR squad for 2012. Narine emerged as a mystery bowler for KKR, claiming 24 wickets in 2012, the second-highest behind Morne Morkel's 25, to help KKR clinch their maiden IPL crown in 2012. In 2014 too when they won their second title, Narine was their second-highest wicket-taker finishing with 21 scalps. Gambhir then tapped into Narine's batting potential and promoted him to open for KKR. This time around, he has been hugely successful with the bat while maintaining his stranglehold with the ball as well. Back as a mentor of the side after playing a similar role with Lucknow Super Giants in the last two seasons, Gambhir said his mantra for KKR this season is to be "courageous." "I'm a strong believer that it's not the most talented team that goes on to win big tournaments. It's the most courageous team that's willing to fight till the last drop of blood, will go on to win the IPL. The mantra for the season is we need to be courageous. "We should have the courage to be positive all the time. and if you walk that path, I'm very, very bullish about the kind of talent in our dressing room. If we fight, if we are courageous and fight for everyone in the dressing room, fight for every fan who has stuck with us, if we do that I think we will be in a good position," he added. Gambhir further recalled how team owner Shah Rukh Khan backed him during his poor run in 2014 and told him "you are not going to drop yourself till you're here". It served him as a motivation to do well and win the title in 2014. "I couldn't score one run in four games. I've said it a numerous number of times I think he is the best owner I've worked with. It's not because I'm now part of KKR or I was part of KKR. "I don't think so in seven years of me captaining KKR we have had a cricketing conversation even for seven minutes, except that patch that I was going through. "That time also we had the conversation because I was on the verge of dropping myself. The only thing he told me was till you're here, you are not going to drop yourself. "Imagine someone, as an owner who himself has been such a big achiever, not even talking about cricket or asking you a single thing about your decision making. "I'm not saying I took all the right decisions. But he never questioned my decisions that's the trust he had in me," he signed off. (With PTI Inputs)

PCB to announce new head coach by end of April

Pakistan will announce new set of coaches for red and white ball formats for the national team by the end of this month, a Cricket Board (PCB) official said on Friday. The PCB also confirmed that besides South Africa’s Gary Kirsten and Australia’s Jason Gillespie, the board had received applications from a couple of reputed coaches by the April 15 deadline.  Also Read: Can DC rise at home? The PCB official said that the new applicants are also in the fray. “The PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that the long-term appointments of coaches will be done through a due process and all commitments would be met by the board,” the source added. The last time PCB followed due process in appointing coaches was in 2019 when it named Misbah-ul-Haq as the head coach and chief selector of the national side. Another reliable source in the PCB said that this time, the board would only invite those candidates for interviews who apply for the coaching positions. “Even in Kirsten and Gillespie’s case though, the board has held direct negotiations with them, and they remain top candidates to be appointed head coaches, [but] they were also told to apply through due process by the deadline,” the source said. Can DC rise at home?

An emotional homecoming awaits Rishabh Pant when he leads Delhi Capitals out at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here, hoping to halt the marauding run of Pat Cummins’s Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday and continue the resurgence which has come to define his life both on and off the field. The last time Pant was seen at the refurbished stadium, he needed crutches to walk but that now seems a distant memory given how remarkably well he has managed to come back both as a wicketkeeper and batter after enduring a life-threatening car accident in 2022. Mixed bag for Capitals Capitals have had a mixed season so far, but a couple of impressive wins against Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans have put them back in the mix. In all, they have three wins and four defeats in seven outings. Placed fourth in the IPL points table, Sunrisers Hyderabad have set a different template altogether with two of the highest-ever totals of 277-3 and 287-3, which will require a lot of heart and skill to counter. Also Read: IPL 2024: Dhoni's 28-run cameo propels CSK to 176 vs LSG Hence, Captain Pant will have to use his resources with extreme caution and guile on a track which will have good bounce and carry for a change. Travis Head (235 runs)—IPL’s foreign flavour of the season—will be keen to build on his 39-ball century and his partner Abhishek Sharma (211 runs) is no pushover either. Both have a penchant for taking the aerial route during Powerplay. Head and Abhishek’s intimidating strike rates of 199 and 197 respectively, will pose a serious challenge for the pace trio of Ishant Sharma, Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar. Adding to the threat is Heinrich Klaasen, who is also striking at 199, and is one of the best finishers in international cricket with propensity to hit balls out of the stadium, which gives SRH’s batting a scary look. Kuldeep on song But Kuldeep Yadav’s (economy of 6.06) left-arm wrist spin could well prove to be a game-changer and in Tristan Stubbs, Pant has got an ideal third spin option alongside Axar Patel (6.75). Pant, who is himself getting back to the top of his game, wouldn’t mind if he can win the toss and opt to bat. But David Warner’s knuckle injury is a cause for concern for Pant and head coach Ricky Ponting although Jake Fraser-McGurk has impressed one and all in his first two matches. While SRH’s batting has been top-notch on belters, their bowlers have suffered a lot on those tracks with only skipper Cummins (7.87) having an economy rate of less than eight runs per over, which is considered good in T20. IPL 2024: Dhoni's 28-run cameo propels CSK to 176 vs LSG

Yellow was the dominant colour at the Ekana Stadium, the home ground of Lucknow Super Giants. There was hardly any blue LSG jerseys visible in the stands as local fans, donning MS Dhoni’s No. 7, came out in full support of the legendary player and his team.  The wish of the Lucknow fans was to see their idol in action even for a few deliveries and it was granted as Dhoni played the kind of cameo that he has become famous for. He faced just nine deliveries, off which he collected 28, hitting three fours and two sixes. His power-hitting made the 45,000 spectators go delirious and helped CSK notch up a fighting 176-6 in their 20 overs. Also Read: IPL 2024 | "Everyone’s nerves got tested": Pandya after PBKS clash But it was not all that rosy for CSK initially as their top-order struggled against some tight bowling by the home team. Left-arm seamer Mohsin Khan struck the biggest blow when he cleaned up in-form Rachin Ravindra first ball.  Thereafter, CSK kept losing wickets. Barring Ajinkya Rahane (34 in 24 balls), the top-order struggled throughout with Shivam Dube and impact batter Sameer Rizvi failing to live up to the expectations. It required a superb innings from Ravindra Jadeja (unbeaten 57 off 40 balls) and cameos by Moeen Ali, who hit leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi for three sixes in three balls, and Dhoni to ensure CSK a fighting total on the red clay pitch, where getting runs at a fast clip is not easy. By and large, the LSG bowling was steady till Moeen and Dhoni tore into the home team’s bowling attack in the final three overs.

IPL 2024 | "Everyone’s nerves got tested": Pandya after PBKS clash

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya heaved a huge sigh of relief with a close nine-run win over Punjab Kings, stating that every player’s nerves got tested in Thursday’s IPL game. Young batting sensation Ashutosh Sharma’s 28-ball 61 was not enough as Punjab Kings, while chasing 193, were bowled out for 183 in 19.1 overs. The five-time champions MI registered only their third win out of seven games this season. Also Read: IPL 2024: MI skipper Hardik Pandya fined for slow over rate during PBKS match ‘A very good game’ “[It was a] very good game. Everyone’s nerves got tested. We spoke that the characters will be checked in this game. But [it is] natural [that] you [would] think you are ahead, but IPL has a tendency to show that oppositions can come back and how,” Pandya said.  The MI skipper was full of praise for Ashutosh’s whirlwind knock, which kept Punjab in the hunt till the end. “Unbelievable, playing the way he did and hitting the ball off the middle. [It is] great for his future. We did speak in the timeout about it, not about how we look, we will keep fighting and make sure [that] we don’t bowl the soft balls. Batsmen played good shots but we were soft in certain overs,” Pandya said. ‘Want to make an impact early on’ The player of the match Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled a brilliant spell of 3-21 said it was a much closer game than he anticipated. “[It was a] much closer game than what we thought. [I] want to make an impact early on. In this format, ball swings for two overs, and you want to make use of that,” he said. Bumrah said the T20 format is cruel for bowlers and is tilted in favour of batters. “This format is a little difficult for the bowlers because the batsmanship is going over, plus the time restrictions and the Impact Player rule. What you can do is prepare your best and back yourself,” he said. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
