Meg Lanning

‘Depression, under-eating caused early retirement’

In a stunning disclosure, Australia’s six-time World Cup-winning former women’s cricket team captain Meg Lanning has said that her early retirement at 31 was forced by bouts of depression and weight-loss due to “over-exercising and under-fuelling”. Also Read: Ex-pacer Zaheer echoes Rohit’s view on subs Lanning took a six-month mental health break after winning the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham to work in a coffee shop. She eventually retired after skipping three international assignments, including the Ashes, in 2023, but did not disclose her reasons at that time. “It sort of just spiralled and I was in denial, even though everyone kept telling me something wasn’t quite right. I was not in a place to be able to go on tour and play cricket and give the commitment levels required for that Ashes series, mentally and physically,” Lanning told The Howie Games podcast. The most successful skipper in the history of Australian cricket, Lanning’s last big success was leading the team to victory in the T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2023. The 32-year-old said it reached a point where she lost appetite and began eating only two meals a day after running around 90km a week, which led to significant weight loss. Ex-pacer Zaheer echoes Rohit’s view on subs

Echoing the views of Rohit Sharma, former pacer Zaheer Khan on Thursday raised serious concerns over the Impact Player rule in the IPL, saying it produces “half-baked all-rounders”. Also Read: Former England Test player Raman Subba Row dies at 92 “I completely agree it’s debatable, little concern for sure. But we need to find a way on how to deal with it. Former England Test player Raman Subba Row dies at 92

Former England Test batsman Raman Subba Row has died at the age of 92, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Thursday.  Also Read: LSG need pluck now At the time of his death, he was England’s oldest living men’s Test cricketer. Subba Row played first-class cricket for Cambridge University and then joined the powerful Surrey side of the 1950s, which won seven successive County Championships. Unable to secure a permanent first-team place at The Oval, he moved to Northamptonshire, where he was appointed captain in 1958. In that year, Subba Row win the first of his 13 England caps and in 1961 he scored a century in both his first and last Tests against Australia. In all, he scored 984 Test runs at an average of over 46. After retiring to pursue a business career, he was the manager of England’s tour of India and Sri Lanka in 1981. Subba Row also served five years as chairman of the Test and County Cricket Board, the forerunner to the ECB, from 1985. He later became one of the International Cricket Council’s first match referees, overseeing 160 fixtures.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. LSG need pluck now

If Mahendra Singh Dhoni gets a chance to bat for Chennai Super Kings in their match against Lucknow Super Giants tonight, the roar from the full house at the Ekana Stadium will be heard miles away. Heavy rains had last year deprived the local fans of the opportunity to see MSD bat, so the spectators will have their fingers crossed to finally see Thala come out and hit a couple of sixes as he had done in the previous match against Mumbai Indians at Mumbai. That’s on the wish list of the cricket enthusiasts. But for the teams, nothing but a win would be on their agenda.  IPL-17 at halfway stage As the IPL reaches the halfway stage, things are getting desperate for the teams and the margin of error is getting smaller. So close the teams are on the points table, a win props up their chances and a defeat feels like a big setback. LSG have a tough job on hand as they have lost their last two games, while CSK are coming here with a huge morale-boosting win over Mumbai Indians. The home team is in a bit of disarray as both their batting and bowling have not been up to the mark lately. They have been battling injuries, especially to their promising fast bowler Mayank Yadav, while many of the batters are still looking for their wanted form. Mayank has been bowling in the nets, thus there is a good chance that he could make a comeback in this important game. Also Read: IPL 2024 | "I am not a big fan of Impact Player": Rohit opens up on IP rule in the league Going into the match, the home side have six points from six games and would be keen to improve their position. Talking to the media, LSG all-rounder Marcus Stoinis felt that winning three out of the six matches so far is not a bad situation to be in. “Yes, there have been three defeats, but still eight matches remain in the league. We lost close encounters against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Delhi Capitals (DC). A few more runs could’ve changed the outcome. We’re still in a good position with three wins and three losses and our confidence remains high.” The other concern for the home team is the disastrous IPL debut their young West Indian fast bowler Shamar Joseph had against KKR. Tough he was quick, but his line and length were wayward. It will be interesting to see if he will be played against CSK at the expense of Naveen-ul-Haq. Stoinis came to the defence of Joseph saying, “Pressure is always present, whether it’s your first or 101st match. He [Shamar] bowled well with a good pace. This was his first outing and he has many more matches to come. I’m confident in his abilities.” CSK’s strong bowling unit While LSG have issues with their bowling, CSK’s attack has been impressive with Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana being the spearheads. Tushar Deshpande and Shardul Thakur have provided ample support while Ravindra Jadeja has been a steady spin option. The LSG batters thus have their task cut out and have to up the ante if they hope to overcome a tough-looking CSK on a pitch where stroke-making has not been as easy as it has been at other IPL venues. Whatever the condition of the pitch, sluggish black clay or sporting red clay pitch, one hopes for the sake of spectators, it provided for an interesting contest between two well-balanced sides tonight. 10No of wickets Chennai Super Kings’s Mustafizur Rahman has claimed in this edition of the IPL

"I am not a big fan of Impact Player": Rohit opens up on IP rule in the league

India skipper Rohit Sharma is “not a big fan” of the IPL’s Impact Player rule as he feels it is hurting the country’s all-rounders by not allowing cricketers like Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube to showcase their bowling prowess. The Impact Player rule, introduced in the 2023 season, allows all IPL teams to substitute a player—batter or bowler—during their respective innings as per the demands of the match. But it has raised eyebrows given that someone like Dube has only been used as a power-hitter by his franchise Chennai Super Kings. He hasn’t bowled his medium pacers despite being in contention for the seam bowling all-rounder’s place in the India set-up along with Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya. Also Read: IPL 2024: Maxwell doubtful for clash against KKR due to hip strain “I genuinely feel that it is going to hold back [development of India all-rounders],” Rohit didn’t mince words while speaking to Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist’s YouTube show Club Prairie Fire. Rohit explained at length why, for the sake of entertainment, development of players shouldn’t be forgotten. India, save Pandya, doesn’t have a genuine seam bowling all-rounder in contention for the T20 World Cup, although Dube’s name is being discussed for the finisher’s role. “Eventually, cricket is played by 11 players not 12 players. I am not a big fan of Impact Player, you are taking out so much from the game just because of little bit of entertainment, for people around,” he pointed out. “...I can give you so many examples, guys like Sundar, Dube are not getting to bowl. For us [Indian team], it is not a good thing you know. I don’t know what you can do about it, but frankly speaking, I am not a fan of it,” he said. IPL 2024: Maxwell doubtful for clash against KKR due to hip strain

IPL 2024 | "Pant's keeping and his captaincy is becoming very sharp": Hopes

Delhi Capitals (DC) bowling coach, James Hopes, reckons that the Impact Player rule, introduced in the Indian Premier League last season, could soon be used in other leagues around the world too. During the post-match media interaction after DC’s thumping six-wicket win over Gujarat Titans (GT), Hopes said that teams go really hard due to the Impact Player rule. “The extra batter [impact sub] has the ability to do that [batsmen going hard]. We try to keep options open with it. Whether I think it’s [impact sub rule] good or bad for the tournament, I am not going to say it here. We have to make it work, and I think it will start creeping into some of the tournaments around the world,” he said. ‘Didn’t expect an easy win’ On getting GT bowled out for 89 and then getting the victory target in the ninth over, the former Australia all-rounder said that they didn’t expect the win to be that easy. “No, I don’t think we expected that. Tonight’s one of those nights. The boys started well with the ball, and if there was any close call, it went our way. If there was any bit of fortune, it went our way,” he reasoned. Also Read: IPL 2024, MI vs PBKS: Mumbai Indians beat Punjab Kings by nine runs James Hopes “Sometimes you’ve [had] those nights. It was good to finish the game with the bat as well. Hopefully, that negates the 260 [272] we conceded to KKR [Kolkata Knight Riders] on the net run-rate,” the Capitals bowling coach said. DC play their next three games at home, with the first match on Saturday against the marauding Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). “We know with the next three games being in Delhi, we are running into the freight train next game—SRH. We have already started preparing for that. If we have a good week and a half, we are going to be right around the Top-4,” the Queenslander hoped. Hopes was all praise for DC skipper and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who accounted for two stumpings and two catches against GT. “Pant’s ’keeping is very good. Everything about his game, his ’keeping, and his captaincy, is becoming very sharp. His batting has been very good from the start. He is leading really well.”It was a horrendous day that GT would like to forget. “Not a great game at all. It is just putting this behind us and making sure that we forget about it as quickly as possible,” remarked GT’s senior pro, David Miller. No pressure on Gill: Miller The South African veteran denied that captaincy was affecting Shubman Gill’s performance. “I don’t think so. He’s already scored 250 runs in the tournament. It was just sticky tonight. He played a bit early, got caught at cover. On another day, he might have hit those for four. I think he is batting superbly and [there is] a lot more to come,” he reiterated.

PBKS vs MI highlights: Ashutosh's heroics in vain as MI win by 9 runs

Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians will be desperate to resurrect their faltering campaigns in IPL 2024 when the two bottom-rung teams face-off on Thursday. Only a few decimal points separate the two teams after six matches each with Punjab's marginally better Net Run Rate of -0.218 keeping them at the seventh spot in the IPL points table, one above Mumbai Indians (-0.234). Both Punjab and Mumbai have lost four matches each and are coming off defeats in their respective last outings, which mean pressure will be high on both the camps to get their act together. Mumbai Indians would know they have enough firepower in the camp to turn the tide but a collective effort on a consistent basis is the need of the hour. Two wins at home against Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru did end their three-match losing run, but a loss to Chennai Super Kings despite Rohit Sharma's century meant the five-time winners have forced them to go back to the drawing board. 'Was a little scared': Rohit opens up on pitch invader incident in Royals' game

Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Rohit Sharma revealed that he was a little scared when a fan entered the ground and stood next to him during IPL 2024 clash against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Wankhade Stadium. The India skipper asserted that he was actually setting up the field while standing at the slips when this incident happened on April 1. "He (the fan) just said I am a big fan and I want a hug. I said yeah hug but please don't do that otherwise you'll be in big trouble. I was actually trying to set up the field, standing at slip. Suddenly, Tim David, who was standing right across at mid-off, was pointing to someone coming behind me. I was not able to understand what he was trying to say. But this guy suddenly stood up next to me and I was a little scared honestly," said Rohit in the Club Prairie Fire podcast. The MI player further spoke about the wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. He stated that Pant is one person that makes him laugh a lot. "The person who makes me laugh the most is Rishabh Pant. He is one crazy guy. I've been watching him since he was a kid and was disappointed for him when he missed a year and a half because of that incident (accident). And I am glad that he is back on the field. But he is quite witty and the kind of things he does behind the stumps makes you laugh," the 37-year-old player added. Also Read: Rohit Sharma denies meeting with Rahul Dravid and selectors for T20 WC selection In the end, Rohit said when he usually wants to laugh, he calls Pant and then he says something and then they both laugh about it. "He has got his way of doing things which is what I like about him. Even when he was recovering from his injury and not playing, he was still at his best at making me laugh. When I actually want to laugh, I call him, there is something he says and we all laugh about it" the right-hand batter concluded. In the last fixture against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rohit became the first Indian to smash 500 sixes in T20 cricket. The highest number of sixes in T20 cricket is by West Indies legend Chris Gayle (1,056 sixes), followed by WI all-rounder Kieron Pollard (860 sixes), Andre Russell (678 sixes) and Colin Munro (548 sixes). In six matches this IPL season, Rohit has scored 261 runs at an average of 52.20 and a strike rate of over 167, with a century. (With agency inputs)
