A seven-race card has been framed by the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) on the eve of the Derby, the feature event being the grade 3, the EBCO Worksmart Breeders' Produce Stakes. With guaranteed stakes money of Rs 15 lakh, of which the winner's share will be Rs 9 lakh and a glittering trophy, some of the best juveniles have jumped into the fray.

This race will settle who between Mozart and Pioneer--who both posted impressive victories on this track when beating the same horse, Oomph--is better. While Mozart just about managed to beat Oomph in photo finish, Pioneer beat the same horse rather comfortably when he whizzed past it after running a bit erratic near the distance post. Pioneer now gets tongue-strap which is expected to improve his striding style; but then Mozart, who was perhaps not at his best on debut, can now post a dramatic improvement.
Interestingly, Pesi Shroff who saddles Mozart has also pitched in Kanchanjunga, a Multidimensional - Xisca filly who will make her debut, while Malesh Narredu who trains Pioneer has also entered Adjudicate into the fray. It is this last-named filly, who posted a smashing six-length victory at Kolkata last month during her debut, who can pose a very serious threat to the local juveniles.
