RWITC offers a grand horse racing weekend

Racegoers will treated to a grand racing spectacle: running of the first two Classics of the Mumbai racing season back-to-back as part of this weekend's racing. The unusual situation has arisen thanks to the un-seasonal rain brought in by the Ockhi storm--and the damage it caused the to the Mahalaxmi racetrack recently. Despite the hardship, the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) management rose to the occasion and ensured that the weekend will be a memorable occasion for racegoers, and framed wonderfully competitive nine-race cards for both the days (Sat & Sun), backed by big prizes for the racegoers, including the Rs 2 lakh cash prize for the popular "Quinella ka Dhamaka" contest.

1000 Guineas
The Spartan Poker Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr 1) will be run tomorrow in which nine three-year-old fillies will participate over the mile trip. The top three fillies in the country presently--Lady In Lace (Chinese Whisper - Sea Spray), Ruffina (Excellent Heart - Miss Danehill) & Manifold (Multidimensional - Dhaawiah)--will be in the line up, and since all three of them are in razor sharp condition, this could turn out to be one of the most competitive 1000 Guineas in recent years. I expect the main fight to be centered between Ruffina and Lady In Lace, with Manifold, thanks to her return to brilliant form which she advertised when winning her prep race on this track last month, likely to pose a serious threat to the duo.

2000 Guineas
By contrast, the Jacqueline Indian 2000 Guineas (Gr 1) to be run on Sunday appears to be at the mercy of Castlebridge (Burden Of Proof - Castle Queen), the three-year-old colt who is facing almost the same rivals on whom he inflicted a crushing defeat when winning the Maharaja Of Morvi Trophy. The weekend racing action boasts of high grade racing as 16 other trophy events have been carded to support the two versions of the Guineas, among them is also the RWITC Ltd Sprint Challenge for which a dozen top class sprinters will line up on Sunday, two of them coming all the way from Bangalore (Siobhan) & Kolkata (Captain Courage).
