It is home to Lord Shiva, enshrined in the form of an ice lingam, which is a naturally-formed ice stalagmite inside the cave.

It is believed that the ice lingam waxes and wanes according to the phases of the moon.

Since it is situated at a high altitude, the cave is mostly covered with snow. The entrance to the shrine is only accessible for a limited period during summer.

There are two routes to reach the Amarnath cave shrine – from Pahalgam, which is 46 kms away, and from Baltal, which is 14 kms away.
