There are three species of elephants – African Savanna, African Forest and Asian.

Elephants are the world’s largest land mammals. African elephants can weigh up to 6000 kilograms, and measure up to 3 metres in height.

One can distinguish between African and Asian elephants through their ears. African elephants have much larger ears than Asian elephants.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, an elephant’s trunk, which is used to drink water, pick up objects, greet each other, etc., has up to 40,000 muscles.

The Asian Elephant is listed as an ‘Endangered’ species in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
