People dress in elaborate hats and costumes during the annual Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival outside of St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue on April 5 in New York City
Dating back to the late 1870s, the event draws hundreds of participants and onlookers for what has become one of New York City’s most colorful spring celebrations
The parade takes place from the 49th and 57th streets, and sees many men and women join in the celebrations that showcase colourful hats and bonnets
According to New York Tourism, the spring celebration which coincides with Easter celebrations in the city, was immortalised by Irving Berlin with some help from Judy Garland and Fred Astaire
It is because the Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival was made popular even more because of the 1948 film Easter Parade with music by Berlin, starring Garland and Astaire
