The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan and Zoo is also known as the Byculla Zoo, and has been popular for its tigers.
Currently, Byculla zoo has two tigers - Karishma and her cub Jay (Pic/Ashish Raje)
As per mid-day's earlier reports, the zoo's nine-year-old male Royal Bengal Tiger named Shakti died on November 17 in 2025, from respiratory failure due to pneumonia. It was followed by the death of his cub, three-year-old male Royal Bengal Tiger named Rudra, who died on October 29 in 2025.
Rudra was the cub born to Shakti and Karishma. The pair of Royal Bengal tigers Shakti (male) and Karishma (female) were brought to the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Garden and Zoo in Byculla from the Siddhartha Garden and Zoo in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on February 12 in 2020 (Pic/Shadab Khan)
