The project falls under the larger ‘Mumbai Beautification Project’, aiming to enhance the city’s aesthetics. Gagrani directed the planting of trees that will help reduce noise pollution along the 2.1-km length of the flyover’s road divider.
Attractive landscaping is to be incorporated to give the flyover a more visually pleasing appearance. Protective railings along the flyover will be constructed with a uniform design to ensure consistency and durability.
The civic chief emphasised eco-friendly approaches in the beautification process to align with sustainable practices. He urged for timely completion of the beautification work to ensure minimal disruption to commuters and pedestrians.
The JJ Flyover connects three wards—A, B, and C—making the beautification of this route crucial for enhancing the city’s appearance. Gagrani highlighted the busy nature of the road between JJ Hospital Junction and Crawford Market, stressing the importance of making the area more attractive and accessible.
The road divider, approximately 3 metres in width, will be landscaped and beautified to create a more inviting space. As part of the plan, outdated double-decker BEST buses will be repurposed into a library, art gallery, and cafeteria under the flyover.

The repurposed buses will serve as special facilities for citizens, contributing to the cultural and social life of the area. Voluntary organisations or women’s self-help groups will be entrusted with the management of these new facilities, as per the instructions of the Municipal Commissioner.
