The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecast light to moderate rainfall for the city, along with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms
In a now cast warning, issued by the IMD earlier in day, the weather department stated that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and light spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in Mumbai and adjoining areas
A similar alert was issued by the IMD Mumbai for parts of Maharashtra including Nashik, Jalna, Beed, Hingoli and Parbhani
The IMD on Tuesday issued an orange alert for Pune, Satara, Sangli and several other parts of Maharashtra, predicting 'heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and lightning on May 20
In its weather bulletin, the IMD said that heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds (50-60 kmph) at isolated places were very likely on Tuesday in parts of Maharashtra
According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast around May 21
Shubhangi Bhute from IMD Mumbai said, "The system could impact weather across Maharashtra, particularly in South Konkan and Mumbai between May 21 and 24"
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) between May 20 and 24
