A major fire broke out at the Gaondevi Vegetable Market building on Gokhale Road in Naupada, Thane West, in the early hours of Thursday (Pic/Anushree Gaikwad)

The incident was reported to the Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) Disaster Management Cell at around 3:43 am by local corporator Sanjay Waghule (Anushree Gaikwad)

A massive firefighting and rescue operation was launched immediately, with multiple civic and emergency agencies rushing to the spot (Anushree Gaikwad)

Unfortunately, one firefighter, Sagar Suryakant Shinde (42) and a security guard, Kalu Shankar Gadekar (50), lost their lives during the operation (Special arrangements)

Following the incident,  Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Thursday announced financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of two civic staffers who died in the massive fire at the Gaondevi vegetable market in the early hours of the day, while Rs 1 lakh each will be provided to the injured (Anushree Gaikwad)

Senior civic officials, including additional and deputy commissioners, the chief fire officer, disaster management officials, police personnel, and MSEDCL staff, are present at the site overseeing operations (Anushree Gaikwad)

The fire erupted in Gaondevi Vegetable Market; which is one Thane's most crowded places, and such incident at this kind of place raises questions against the concerned authorities (Anushree Gaikwad)
