Cosmetic surgery in India has steadily entered the mainstream, with patients today more open about procedures ranging from rhinoplasty to body contouring. However, according to Dr. Lukesh Patil, a senior Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon with over 14 years of experience, acceptance alone isn&rsquo;t enough; accurate information is still lagging.
&ldquo;Cosmetic surgery is no longer taboo, but misinformation still is. What worries me is how casually complex medical procedures are being portrayed online,&rdquo; Dr Patil.
With social media flooded with transformation reels and influencer-led trends, procedures are often shown as quick, painless, and risk-free. Dr Patil warns that this portrayal can create unrealistic expectations and unsafe decision-making.
&ldquo;A short video cannot explain anatomy, surgical risks, recovery time, or long-term outcomes. Cosmetic surgery is not content; it&rsquo;s clinical science,&rdquo; he explains.
Dr. Patil is the Founder and Director of Seraphic Aesthetics, Navi Mumbai, and is also associated with Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He stresses that safety, credentials, and proper infrastructure matter far more than price or popularity.
&ldquo;Cheap packages and trend-driven procedures often ignore individual anatomy. When safety is compromised, the damage, physical and emotional, can be permanent,&rdquo; he adds.
Academically, Dr Patil brings strong credentials to his practice. He completed his MBBS from RSMU, Ryazan, followed by an MS in General Surgery from Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital, Indore, where he received a Gold Medal and Best Resident Award. He later earned an MCh in Plastic Surgery from VMMC &amp; Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. He has also published in national and international journals and authored chapters in medical textbooks.
His areas of expertise include rhinoplasty, facelift surgeries, breast augmentation and reduction, liposuction, and tummy tuck procedures, with a focus on natural, balanced results.
&ldquo;Patients should ask the right questions, who is operating, where the surgery will be done, and whether it&rsquo;s truly needed. Informed consent is the real luxury in cosmetic surgery,&rdquo; Dr Patil concludes.
