Netflix is reportedly among the streaming platforms being considered for global rights to the India vs Japan T20I, a deal that would give the platform its first known live-cricket broadcast if completed. a move that, if it happens, would mark the platform's entry into a sport it has never carried live, via a fixture built for exactly the kind of one-off, story-first storytelling Netflix has built its sports strategy around.
It's a deliberately unconventional entry point: not the IPL, not a World Cup, but the first-ever senior men's T20I meeting between India and Japan a genuinely new fixture, on a genuinely new stage, with a genuinely new audience question attached. YouTube is also reported to be assessing the same global rights, meaning Netflix if it commits will be closing this deal in competitive company, not isolation.
The fixture itself carries weight independent of the streaming conversation. Organised by the Japan Cricket Association under its 'Sport 75' programme to mark 75 years of India Japan diplomatic relations, and held alongside the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, the match is scheduled for&nbsp;22 September 2026&nbsp;at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi, kicking off at 9:30 AM IST. The venue is already expanding capacity to handle expected demand.
FanCode is reported to have secured India's streaming rights, while television coverage is also being finalised, according to current reports. the only open question left is the biggest one: does cricket get its Netflix moment on 22 September?
Nothing is confirmed yet. But the fact that it's even a live conversation says something about where this sport is headed.
