Every year, around 11 million people are expected to develop piles in India, and the number is increasing rapidly in urban areas. Due to a sedentary lifestyle, increased consumption of junk food, stress, constipation and poor eating habits, piles are forming rapidly. Piles, also known as haemorrhoids, are the swollen veins around the anal and rectum area that causes discomfort and pain, often associated with embarrassment. By the age of 50, 50% of people will develop piles at least once in their life, according to studies. And if left untreated, they can cause serious problems in bowel movements leading to blood clots, infections and poor lifestyle. That’s why Dr. Mukesh Kota says, “There are a variety of surgical and non-surgical ways to treat piles. However, the best thing to do is consult with a specialist who can advise implementing effective precautionary steps.”

Additionally, he explains that there are stages of piles where initial grades 1 and 2 can be medically treated.  This phase can be treated effectively with a few lifestyle changes and by taking medications like over-the-counter creams, ointments, and suppositories. There are treatments where the ointment is directly applied to the affected area. Medications like this can help manage piles easily by reducing inflammation, itching, and pain. In some cases, using oral pain relievers can prove beneficial.
