Engineering in India is moving beyond the traditional businesses that built the country's factories and infrastructure. A new generation of companies is working across space technology, robotics, defence electronics, electric mobility, advanced machine tools and specialised power equipment.
Many are developing products that were once largely imported or made by only a handful of global manufacturers. Others are upgrading established engineering products by integrating software, automation and electronics.
This shift is visible across sectors. Private Indian companies are designing rockets, warehouses are deploying fleets of robots, machine tools are becoming more automated and electric vehicles are incorporating more home-grown technology. Together, these developments reflect a broader move in Indian manufacturing towards products with greater engineering and technology content.
As a result, mechanical engineering and digital technology are becoming increasingly interconnected across the manufacturing sector. These ten companies offer a snapshot of how that change is unfolding.
1. Skyroot Aerospace
India's space sector has opened up to private companies in recent years, with Skyroot Aerospace among the businesses helping drive this change. Founded in Hyderabad in 2017, the company is developing the Vikram series of launch vehicles for small-satellite missions.
Its work combines aerospace engineering, advanced materials, propulsion and software. Skyroot's Vikram-S became the company's first rocket to reach space in 2022. It is now developing larger Vikram vehicles for commercial satellite launches, with the goal of establishing a private launch business from India.
2.Azad Engineering
Precision is central to the work of Azad Engineering. Based in Hyderabad, the company manufactures complex components for aerospace, defence, energy and other high-technology industries.
Its products include components for turbines, aerospace engines and other critical systems. The company serves global customers and has expanded its capabilities in advanced manufacturing and precision machining. Its development reflects the opportunity for Indian manufacturers to move beyond basic components and produce parts that demand tighter tolerances, specialised materials and extensive testing.
3. Jyoti CNC Automation
Machine tools play a central role in modern manufacturing, as the quality of a finished product often depends on the accuracy of the equipment used to make it. Based in Rajkot, Jyoti CNC Automation manufactures CNC machines for sectors including automotive, aerospace, defence and general engineering.
Its portfolio includes multi-axis machining centres and other advanced tools designed for complex manufacturing tasks. The company is also moving towards automation and integrated manufacturing solutions. As Indian manufacturers take on more sophisticated components, demand for locally made, high-precision machine tools may grow with them.
4. Addverb Technologies
The growth of e-commerce and automated supply chains has changed warehouse operations considerably. Addverb Technologies develops technology designed to support this shift.
Based in Noida, the company develops warehouse robots and automation systems for storage, picking and the movement of goods. Its solutions bring together robotics, software and warehouse management systems. Addverb has deployed its technology across hundreds of warehouses in India and overseas, reflecting the growing role of Indian technology businesses in automating operations once heavily dependent on manual workforces.
5. Data Patterns (India)
Modern defence systems rely heavily on electronics, including radar, communications, avionics and electronic warfare equipment. Chennai-based Data Patterns develops technologies for India's defence and aerospace sectors.
The company designs and manufactures electronic systems for applications including radar, electronic warfare, avionics and fire-control systems. It has built much of its technology and manufacturing capability in-house. As India seeks to reduce its dependence on imported defence equipment, specialised electronics companies have an important role in the domestic supply chain.
6. LOADMATE
Material handling is another part of the factory that is becoming more precise and application-specific. Surat-based LOADMATE has worked in this field since 1991, manufacturing EOT cranes, electric chain hoists, wire rope hoists and other lifting systems.
The company designs and manufactures equipment in-house and has supplied cranes and hoists across India and more than 30 countries. Customisation remains a large part of its work, particularly where load, headroom, duty cycle or factory layout makes a standard crane unsuitable. For companies evaluating the best EOT Crane manufacturer for a particular application, these engineering details often matter as much as lifting capacity. LOADMATE also operates as an Electric Chain Hoist Manufacturer, with systems configured for different duty classes and space requirements.
7. Ather Energy
Ather Energy was among the early Indian companies to develop electric scooters around its own technology, rather than simply adapting existing petrol-vehicle platforms. Its work spans the vehicle, battery management system, software and charging infrastructure.
The company has continued to expand its manufacturing capabilities alongside the growth of the electric two-wheeler market. Its newer products feature updated platforms and battery technology, while its manufacturing operations are being expanded to support higher volumes. Ather's approach illustrates how electric mobility is bringing electronics and software closer to conventional vehicle manufacturing.
8. Quality Power Electrical Equipments
The shift towards renewable energy is creating new demands on India's power grid. Electricity from different sources must be transmitted efficiently, while voltage levels and grid stability need to be managed across an increasingly complex network.
Quality Power Electrical Equipments manufactures equipment for these applications, including transformers, reactors, harmonic filters and systems for reactive power compensation and grid stability. The company serves customers in India and overseas and works in areas such as HVDC and FACTS. Its business connects conventional electrical engineering with the evolving needs of modern power networks.
9. Titagarh Rail Systems
Titagarh Rail Systems has decades of experience in railway manufacturing, but its business now extends well beyond freight wagons. The company manufactures passenger coaches, metro trains, wagons and railway-system components.
Its recent work includes metro coaches and trainsets for projects across India, alongside the development of propulsion and other railway systems. As Indian Railways and metro networks invest in new rolling stock and modern technology, manufacturers such as Titagarh are taking on a broader range of engineering work across the rail ecosystem.
10. Jash Engineering
Water and wastewater treatment depend on a range of specialised mechanical equipment. Jash Engineering has built its business in this field, manufacturing equipment used for screening, filtration and other stages of treatment.
Its systems serve municipal and industrial projects in India and overseas. As cities face growing pressure on water resources and governments focus on treatment and reuse, demand for specialised water-management equipment is increasing. Jash represents a segment of Indian engineering closely linked to infrastructure needs and increasingly reliant on specialised design and manufacturing.
Engineering Is Becoming a Technology Business
The companies featured here operate in very different industries. At first glance, a rocket manufacturer may seem to have little in common with a warehouse automation company or a water-treatment equipment maker.
What connects them is the growing role of technology in Indian engineering. For some, that means software and robotics; for others, electronics, advanced materials, precision machining or power-control technology.
This is changing the shape of Indian manufacturing. Companies are moving up the value chain and developing products that require more design work, testing and specialised skills before they reach the factory floor.
India's next manufacturing gains will depend on more than producing at greater scale. They will also rely on making products that are more complex, specialised and difficult to manufacture. The companies working in these areas offer a glimpse of what that shift could look like.
