Since its earliest days as three friends running motorcycle expeditions across India and beyond, the company has set aside a share of its earnings for underprivileged children, long before the business itself was in the black, choosing to fund welfare and healthcare of underprivileged children not as a reward for success but as a condition to it.
Not CSR. A Founding Belief.
Founders Anil Nair, Amit Desai and John Francis draw a clear line between what GMT does and what most companies call CSR, which tends to arrive after profitability, structured, budgeted and timed for visibility. GMT's commitment predates all of that. Through GMT, the company's giving-back platform, a portion of earnings from every tour goes toward the care of underprivileged children in India, supporting basic nutrition, healthcare and treatment for life-threatening
Why a Motorcycle Company, of All Businesses
There is something counterintuitive about a motorcycle touring company making this choice. GMT does not manufacture medicine or run hospitals; it sells adventure, on the surface a discretionary indulgence. That is precisely the founders' point: if a business built around something as seemingly self-indulgent as motorcycle travel can choose to give before it is asked to, any business can. The founders don't position GMT as a rare case study for others to follow. What it is, they'd argue, is an unlikely candidate, a business no one expects to find in a CSR conversation, and that is exactly the point: its role is to draw attention to platforms doing good, not as a strategy, but as something built into how the company sees itself.
How the Philosophy Rides Along
The commitment is not confined to a website page or an annual report. On the road, across ten to twelve day expeditions through unfamiliar terrain, conversations naturally turn toward why the tours support the cause they do. Riders who signed up purely for the thrill of the Transfagarasan or the high passes of Ladakh often leave asking how they can contribute themselves.
What the Support Means for the Children
Bal Asha Trust, the Mumbai-based child welfare organisation GMT contributes to, cares for children whose immediate concerns are shelter, nutrition and medical care. For them, the source of this particular contribution is unusual: a company built on open roads and distant mountain passes, about as far from their daily reality as a business can be. That contrast is part of what makes it land. It signals that attention and ambition are not reserved for people with easier starting points, and that support can come from directions no one would expect. For children who may never sit on a motorcycle or cross a border, the idea that riders are out there, mile after mile, in some way riding for them, carries its own quiet excitement, a sign that the world's adventures can circle back to include them too.
The Road Ahead
As GMT expands its international footprint, with tours across Europe, Africa and Asia, the longer-term goal is for GMT to be recognised not only for its tours but as a visible flag bearer for purpose-led entrepreneurship in India, businesses that build social impact into their foundation rather than bolt it on afterward.
