For much of the past decade, the relationship between athletes and business has been defined by sponsorships, endorsements and minority cheques. Sania Mirza's new role at Terra-Invest points to a more substantive model: the athlete as investment leader, sector specialist and partner to founders.
The six-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 has joined the UAE-based investment firm to co-lead its activity in longevity and preventive health, as well as sport and athletic performance. Working alongside Terra-Invest Partners Krishan Rattan and Ankiti Bose and the firm's founding team, she will participate in origination, diligence and portfolio value creation.
That distinction matters. Mirza is not being brought in simply for visibility. Her value comes from an operating history built under conditions that few traditional investors experience: constant measurement, global competition, injury risk, recovery cycles, high-stakes decision-making and the discipline required to remain elite across almost twenty years.
Terra-Invest believes those instincts can translate into a differentiated investment edge. In performance-led sectors, a compelling pitch can be difficult to separate from a durable product. An athlete who has spent a career evaluating coaches, protocols, technologies and marginal gains brings a powerful filter to that process.
"I spent twenty years treating my body as the asset," Mirza said in announcing the move. "You learn quickly that recovery, diagnostics and prevention are not luxuries; they're the whole game."
Her post-playing career has already demonstrated that she can convert experience into institutions. Through the Sania Mirza Tennis Academy, she has helped create professional-grade coaching and development pathways for young players in India. She has also built an investment and advisory track record across sport, media, health and consumer ventures.
Terra-Invest Partners Krishan Rattan and Ankiti Bose described Mirza's combination of endurance and institution-building as especially relevant to the firm's portfolio. Bose put it this way: "Sania has done the hardest thing in sport - sustained excellence over two decades - and then done the harder thing, which is build after it. She sees things in a founder that a spreadsheet doesn't."
The appointment fits Terra-Invest's broader partnership-driven model. The firm invests across private and public markets and positions itself as long-term capital for exceptional founders, operators and institutions. In Mirza, it is adding someone who can evaluate both the promise of a business and the reality of the user it hopes to serve.
That may be the most important shift represented by the move. Athlete investing is maturing from access and association into judgment and accountability. Mirza's transition from centre court to the cap table is not a departure from her first career; it is an application of everything that career taught her.
