Rahul Kumar Yadav spent years waiting for judges to recognise a scoring technique. At the 2026 USA Karate National Championship in Spokane, he stood on the other side of the tatami, learning to make those decisions himself.
The assignment marked a new phase in a karate career that began at an inter-school championship in Fatehabad, Haryana, in 1999. After more than two decades as a competitor, coach and team official, Yadav is now pursuing the demanding route toward international refereeing.
A Career Across Continents
The transition changes the pressure rather than removing it. A competitor must identify an opening and act in a fraction of a second. An official must see the technique, timing, control, rules and safety of both athletes almost simultaneously, then deliver a decision without emotion.
Yadav's international record stretches across Asia, Europe, Australia, North America, Africa and the Middle East. He won kata gold at the Indo-Bhutan Karate Championship in 2009 and recorded a top-eight finish, including a kumite bout victory, at the 2011 WKF World Junior and Cadet Karate Championship in Melaka, Malaysia.
In 2013, he travelled with the Indian contingent to the WKF Cadet and Junior World Championship in Guadalajara, Spain, in an official capacity. Two years later, he served as an official and team manager at the Commonwealth Karate Championship in New Delhi.
His competitive career was defined as much by returning as by winning. Yadav took silver in kumite at the 2015 ISKA Australian Open in Sydney, then returned in 2016 to claim gold. He later won kata gold at the Canada Open in both 2017 and 2018 and bronze at the International Turkish Open in 2019. He also competed at the WKF Karate 1 Premier League in Dubai in 2017.
From Athlete to Official
Those appearances gave him a close view of international standards, including the narrow margins that decide elite contests. They now inform his work as an official. His career record lists refereeing and judging assignments in India, Nepal, Thailand and Turkey before his move into the United States system.
During 2026, Yadav served as a referee and judge at the Sacramento Karate Championship, attended a USA Karate Region 1 referee seminar in California, and worked at the national championship in Spokane. He plans to continue developing toward Pan American-level refereeing and ultimately the World Karate Federation pathway. Those remain goals in progress rather than qualifications already secured.
Passing Experience Forward
Yadav has also spent years coaching. His record includes work as chief coach at Karate Planet HQ Dojo, leadership of the Fatehabad district team, school coaching, self-defence instruction and support for the Haryana state team. He has said he hopes to help develop an Olympic champion.
He credits his parents, Shiv Ram and Uma, along with Sensei Rajnesh Chaudhary and Shihan Bharat Sharma, for supporting different stages of his journey.
From local school mats to international arenas, Yadav's career has repeatedly changed shape. The latest chapter is less about being seen and more about seeing clearly: protecting athletes, applying the rules and earning their trust one decision at a time.
