Though she mustered up the courage to confide in her parents-who stepped in with decisive emotional support and intervened with the perpetrators' families-the psychological aftermath left an indelible mark. Aanya realized that if someone with an active, privileged safety net felt so&nbsp;helpless, countless others without those resources were enduring silent agony. Conversations within her inner circle soon unearthed buried trauma, including a close friend who had carried the burden of childhood abuse for years without ever telling a soul.

Bridging the Empathy Deficit in Crisis Response
Aanya&rsquo;s research revealed a glaring institutional flaw: while emergency lines (112), women&rsquo;s distress numbers (1091), legal aid (NALSA), and mental health services exist, they operate in silos. Women in acute distress are forced to navigate bureaucratic, fragmented systems alone. More critically, traditional channels often lacked the empathetic, non-judgmental listening ear needed to earn a distressed girl's trust.
Determined that no woman should ever face fear alone, Aanya founded SAHAARA, a 24/7 composite helpline designed to transform India&rsquo;s crisis response into a unified, compassionate point of contact. Partnering with the Sudhamta Foundation, she built a human-centred care ecosystem backed by trained student volunteers, mental health responders, and a dedicated network of 20 pro bono lawyers. SAHAARA acts as an active handholding bridge-providing immediate jurisdictional guidance to the correct local police station, coordinating medical help, offering legal aid, and delivering long-term trauma counselling.

Navigating the Tidal Islands: Outreach in the Sundarbans
Understanding that urban hotlines solve only part of the equation, Aanya expanded her mission to underserved rural regions where institutional infrastructure rarely reaches. In the tidal islands of the Sundarbans, where waterways replace roads, she spearheaded an intensive on-ground outreach campaign in partnership with Young Indians (Yi) Kolkata and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Working alongside local ASHA workers and panchayat leaders, Aanya&rsquo;s team conducted interactive safety workshops in Bengali across five community locations, engaging over 200 participants, including 80 adolescent girls and 100 adult women. By introducing anonymous question boxes and small-group discussions, she created&nbsp;safe harbours to dismantle cultural taboos surrounding domestic violence, trafficking risks, and cyber harassment. Simultaneously, she integrated the&nbsp;Sakhi&nbsp;initiative, pairing menstrual hygiene education with the distribution of sanitary products to reinforce that bodily dignity and safety are fundamentally intertwined.
A Long-Term Vision for Nationwide Impact
For Aanya, SAHAARA is the foundation of a lifelong commitment to social equity. Driven by a passion for economics, data science, and gender studies,&nbsp;she plans to pursue higher education abroad in the US or UK to acquire advanced policy and research frameworks. Her long-term goal remains firmly anchored in India: returning with global expertise to scale SAHAARA into a permanent, nationwide care network.
"Every woman I meet in the field teaches me something about courage," Aanya reflects. "SAHAARA exists to ensure that every woman has a sympathetic ear to speak to and a helping hand to hold in times of crisis." By converting personal adversity into structured grassroots action, this sixteen-year-old is demonstrating how youth leadership and radical empathy can transform women&rsquo;s safety infrastructure-from city streets to the remotest waterways.
