From Villages to the United Nations: The Growing Importance of Grassroots Diplomacy

Grassroots diplomacy is reshaping global change through education, local leadership, community action, and inclusive governance in India.

Diplomacy has become much more than a series of conferences, official residences and state meetings in recent years. One of the currents in the world is now that significant change in the world starts in the local communities. This changing trajectory has raised the profile of “grassroots diplomacy”, a people-first means of having social workers, teachers, local leaders, civil society groups, and community-led initiatives to influence national and international dialogue.

Diplomacy was traditionally seen as a world that belonged only to the governments and to the elite of the policy-makers. But in today's world issues like educational inequality, climate migration, gender injustice, public health crises and child protection can't be addressed with mere policy declarations. These are problems which need local involvement, cultural awareness and long-term community involvement. Grassroots diplomacy fills this gap by bringing the realities of people to the institutional decision-making process.
