Forget the crowded resorts and cookie-cutter beach shacks. A growing number of Mumbaikars are trading five-star check-ins for a home-cooked meal and a hammock on someone's verandah, and the Konkan coast is where they are finding it.

The homestay has quietly become the preferred way to see this stretch of Maharashtra's coastline. Instead of driving past villages on the way to a hotel, travellers are now driving into them, staying with families who fish, farm and cook the way they always have, and folding that rhythm into their own weekend. It is slower, cheaper, and by most accounts, far more memorable than a standard hotel stay.
