As India celebrates its 80th Independence Day, there is much to look back on with pride. Seventy-nine years after freedom from colonial rule, India stands as a confident democracy, a major economy, a technological power and an increasingly influential voice on the global stage.
Independence Day, however, is not only an occasion to celebrate how far India has travelled. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the kind of Republic India continues to aspire to become.
A recent incident in Haldwani provides an uncomfortable reason for such reflection.
On August 8, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public meeting at the Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. Two days later, members of an organisation reportedly conducted a shuddhikaran, or purification ritual, at the ground.
The episode has since generated considerable political debate. Kharge raised the matter in Parliament and spoke about the humiliation he felt. Rahul Gandhi described the incident as reflective of a &ldquo;Manuvadi mindset&rdquo;, connecting it with India&rsquo;s history of untouchability and caste discrimination.
Political arguments around the episode will continue. But there is a larger question worth considering:
What does independence truly mean if dignity and equality are not experienced equally by every Indian?
The framers of India&rsquo;s Constitution understood that freedom from colonial rule would not, by itself, remove deeply rooted social inequalities. That is why equality was placed at the heart of the constitutional framework.
Article 14 guarantees equality before the law and equal protection of the laws.
Article 15 prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth.
Article 17 abolishes untouchability and prohibits its practice in any form.
These are not merely legal provisions. Together, they represent a fundamental constitutional principle: an individual&rsquo;s dignity cannot be determined by birth.
Dr. B. R. Ambedkar repeatedly warned that political democracy could not endure without social democracy. For him, liberty, equality and fraternity were not abstract ideals but principles that had to shape the way people lived with and regarded one another.
That idea remains profoundly relevant.
At the same time, it is important not to casually equate religious ritual with discrimination. India has diverse religious and cultural traditions in which ceremonies of purification have existed for centuries. A ritual considered in isolation cannot automatically be characterised as an act of caste prejudice.
But context matters.
When the language and symbolism of &ldquo;purification&rdquo; enter a public controversy following a gathering addressed by a leader from a community that has historically experienced untouchability and exclusion, legitimate questions inevitably arise about the message such an act conveys.
Those questions deserve careful examination rather than political point-scoring.
The facts and motivations surrounding the Haldwani episode should be established fairly. But whatever conclusions ultimately emerge, the controversy offers an opportunity to consider a broader question: how do our words, symbols and actions affect fellow citizens when they carry the weight of historical discrimination?
India has transformed enormously since 1947. Its achievements in science, technology, infrastructure, entrepreneurship and economic development have changed both the lives of millions and the country&rsquo;s standing in the world.
Yet national progress cannot be measured by economic indicators or global influence alone. It must also be reflected in the everyday dignity experienced by citizens.
This responsibility cannot belong to one political party or ideology. Governments and opposition parties, institutions and civil society, community leaders and individual citizens all have a role in protecting the constitutional principle of equality.
Caste discrimination should therefore never become simply another instrument of partisan politics. Our position on human dignity cannot change depending on which party governs or which leader is involved.
The Constitution provides a standard that transcends those political divisions.
As the Tricolour is raised across India and around the world this Independence Day, there is every reason to celebrate the extraordinary distance India has travelled.
But patriotism and introspection are not opposites. A confident nation should be capable of both.
Perhaps one of the most meaningful ways to honour India&rsquo;s independence is to recommit ourselves to the promise underlying Articles 14, 15 and 17: that no Indian should ever be made to feel lesser because of their birth.
Because ultimately, that may be one of the unfinished promises of independence - not simply that India is free, but that every Indian can experience that freedom with equal dignity.
