For the Terra Invest founding partner, tennis was never just recreation. It became an early education in accountability, recovery, patience and the difference between conviction and stubbornness.
Long before Krishan Rattan was managing capital, structuring complex financial transactions or building investment businesses, sport was already teaching him lessons that would follow him into boardrooms decades later.
For the Founding Partner of Terra Invest, tennis has remained a particularly important thread. Rattan played during his formative years and continued to be immersed in sport during his time at the University of California, Berkeley. Today, after a career spanning banking, entrepreneurship and alternative asset management across New York, London and other global financial centres, he still returns to the tennis court as a useful way of thinking about pressure, decision-making and performance.
What stayed with him was not simply competitiveness. It was the psychology of having to perform while being completely accountable for the next decision.
&ldquo;Tennis teaches you very quickly that nobody is coming onto the court to solve the problem for you. There are moments when everything is working, and there are moments when nothing is. You still have to find a way through the match.&rdquo;
Learning to play the point in front of you
Investment careers are usually described through their successes: the transaction that closed, the investment that compounded, the business that scaled. The lived version is far less linear. Markets turn. Financing windows close. Management teams make mistakes. Political decisions alter assumptions. A technology that looked transformative can be overtaken by something better.
Rattan believes tennis provides a useful mental model for that uncertainty. A lost point cannot be replayed. A player has to absorb what happened without allowing it to contaminate the next decision.
&ldquo;You cannot spend the next five games thinking about the point you just lost. That is one of the most transferable lessons from sport into business. Learn from the outcome, but do not become emotionally trapped by it.&rdquo;
That distinction between learning from an outcome and being controlled by it has become increasingly important to Rattan&rsquo;s work at Terra Invest. His career has included senior roles at Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and Soci&eacute;t&eacute; G&eacute;n&eacute;rale, followed by entrepreneurship in alternative asset management. Terra Invest&rsquo;s published biography says he has raised, deployed and overseen more than US$12 billion in transactions and previously established Mount-Row, which grew to more than US$1.2 billion in assets under management.
Conviction is not the same as stubbornness
Rattan says one of the dangerous instincts in investing is the desire to be right all the time. Sport provides an antidote because even elite athletes lose points, games and matches. Excellence is not the elimination of mistakes. It is the ability to stop individual mistakes from becoming systemic ones.
In portfolio terms, not every investment needs to become extraordinary. The discipline lies in understanding downside, position sizing, correlations and the moment at which an original thesis no longer holds.
&ldquo;There is a huge difference between conviction and stubbornness. Conviction keeps you in a match. Stubbornness can make you keep playing the wrong shot.&rdquo;
That philosophy helps explain why Rattan is interested in structural themes such as artificial intelligence, healthcare, energy and financial infrastructure, but is wary of treating a fashionable narrative as an investment thesis. The bigger the theme, he argues, the more important it becomes to understand the system around it.
Why sport has become an investment category
Rattan&rsquo;s relationship with sport is increasingly relevant in another way. Professional sport has evolved into a sophisticated global asset class. Teams are brands. Media rights have become strategic assets. Women&rsquo;s sport is attracting larger audiences and commercial investment. Athlete-led businesses are multiplying. Performance data, recovery technology, sports medicine and longevity are beginning to overlap.
A modern sports ecosystem can combine intellectual property, broadcasting, sponsorship, ticketing, hospitality, real estate, consumer products, data and technology. That makes it far more interesting to institutional investors than the old model of simply buying a team and hoping its valuation rises.
Rattan is especially interested in the intersection of sport, health and longevity. Elite athletes have long had access to sophisticated diagnostics, recovery protocols, biomechanics, nutrition and performance medicine. Many of those ideas are now moving into mainstream preventive care.
&ldquo;A lot of what we now call longevity is really about taking ideas that have existed in elite performance environments and making them useful and accessible to a much broader population.&rdquo;
The Berkeley effect
Berkeley also remains part of the story. Rattan maintains ties with the university and serves on the steering committee for the Haas School of Business. He describes the environment as one in which technology, academia, entrepreneurship and competitive sport existed unusually close to one another.
Decades later, that mix looks increasingly relevant to the investment world. Artificial intelligence is moving into healthcare. Medicine is becoming more predictive. Sport is becoming more data-driven. Universities remain important meeting points between basic research and commercial capital.
&ldquo;You want to spend time with people who are thinking about what becomes possible next, not simply what can be financed today.&rdquo;
The long game
Perhaps the most durable sporting lesson for Rattan is a sense of time. A tennis match can turn quickly. Momentum disappears and returns. The player who dominates early does not always win.
Business careers behave the same way. Rattan&rsquo;s own path has moved from banking into entrepreneurship, alternative asset management and Terra Invest through very different market cycles. The common denominator has not been one asset class, but an ability to keep learning and re-entering the arena.
&ldquo;In business, as in sport, you have extraordinary days and very difficult ones. Neither tells you the whole story. What matters is whether you can come back with the same curiosity, discipline and willingness to play the next point properly.&rdquo;
For someone whose professional life now involves thinking about the future, it is one of the oldest lessons in his repertoire: play the point in front of you.
