India’s modern trade story is no longer simply about the growth of supermarkets or organised retail. It is increasingly about how retail is influencing what consumers discover, evaluate and choose. The modern trade shelf has evolved from a point of distribution into a point of discovery, comparison and brand building. As consumers gain access to a wider assortment across supermarkets, e-commerce and quick commerce, modern trade is becoming increasingly strategic for brands, particularly as consumers show a greater willingness to trade up when they see a meaningful difference in what they are buying.
The numbers reflect this shift. NielsenIQ had earlier reported that modern trade recorded a threefold acceleration in OND 2025 compared with Q3 2025, while e-commerce reached an 18% share of FMCG sales across India’s top eight metros. These numbers point to more than a change in where consumers shop; they signal a fundamental change in how brands need to approach distribution, visibility and discovery.
