The Stream Panther Podcast

Exclusive : On a recent episode of The Stream Panther podcast, Founder-Producer Ajay Tambe sat down with Actress Jillian Mueller to discuss her exhilarating journey from starring on Broadway in Pretty Woman to landing a coveted role on Netflix’s The Crew.

In an engaging conversation filled with candid insights, Mueller detailed the twists and turns that marked her transition from the stage to the screen. With characteristic candor, she recalled her days as an ensemble member and understudy in Pretty Woman-a role she eventually led-and how that chapter set the stage for her next big break.

A Last-Minute Break on “The Crew”

Jillian’s path to television was paved with constant auditions and self-taped submissions. “I was auditioning constantly,” she shared, reflecting on a time when Broadway gigs dominated her schedule. Yet, her desire to break into film and TV was a long-held dream. After Pretty Woman closed, the momentum carried her forward into a new arena.

Her initial foray into The Crew began with an audition for the role of Jesse-a role for which she was “pinned” among several contenders. Despite the setback when the part went to another actress, Mueller’s persistence never wavered. Then, just before Halloween, a last-minute opportunity emerged. “Within 24 hours, I recorded a self-tape for the role of Catherine,” she recalled. “There’s something kind of nice about that quick turnaround-you don’t have time to overthink it.”

A Pivotal Call and a Screen Test with Kevin James

While on the move-literally at an airport-Mueller received a call that would change everything. “I was on my way out of town when I got the call: they wanted me to do a screen test with Kevin James in two days,” she recounted. Faced with a tough decision, she chose her passion over travel plans. “I said, ‘Screw it,’ and went on my trip, planning to return early for the test.”

Yet, fate had another surprise in store. Mere moments before her scheduled screen test, her agents called with news that left her both astonished and relieved: “They told me I didn’t need to screen test at all-they were offering me the part based solely on my audition tape.”

This departure from the exhaustive Broadway audition process-a process that often requires six to eight rounds of videos-underscored a new, agile approach in film and TV casting.

Learning from Actor Kevin James

Upon joining The Crew, Jillian was quick to acknowledge the invaluable experience of working with sitcom veteran Kevin James. “Acting with him was like a master class in sitcom acting,” she said. “I only knew him from his movies, so naturally, I was a bit nervous about what to expect.”

However, James’s warm demeanor and professional expertise quickly put her at ease. “He’s a family man-kind, gracious, and totally in his element. He knows exactly what he’s good at, which made it so easy for me to hold firm in my own approach as Catherine, the ‘hard ass’ on the show,” Mueller explained.

Their on-screen chemistry, born of mutual respect and an effortless blend of styles, became one of the show’s standout elements. “When we’re in the pocket together-it’s one of the best feelings,” she added.

Trusting the Process: Overcoming Ego and Embracing Humility

Throughout the discussion, Mueller emphasized that success isn’t just about talent-it’s about trust and the willingness to put your ego aside. Reflecting on her time as an understudy in Pretty Woman, she shared a lesson that resonates deeply with any artist navigating the highs and lows of show business.

“I chose to be the understudy because it was an opportunity to stay in the game in New York, to be seen, and to be ready at all times,” she explained. “It was about trusting the process, even when it wasn’t my ideal scenario.” Her dedication eventually paid off, and she was offered the lead role-a rare and gratifying moment in a competitive field.
