Our AI conversation has so far been trapped between two familiar instincts: ambition and apprehension. One imagines India coding, scaling and deploying its way into an AI superpower; the other fears we are laying the rails for a technological future whose terms were written elsewhere. But both frames accept the premise that AI is primarily an economic or technological project. The more consequential question is whether India can bring something of its own to the making of this future-not merely talent and scale, but a philosophical vocabulary shaped by centuries of questioning consciousness, agency, ethics and the nature of the self. The real opportunity is not to catch up with Silicon Valley’s roadmap, but to challenge the roadmap itself.
