with Wyatt Feegrado Agreeing to a first date in front of an audience it turns out does not necessarily prepare someone to have oneThe show brings South Asian singles onstage to meet for the first time with two comedians hosting and a paying audience following every exchange Attraction would give the room something to watch So would an entertaining disagreement But neither is guaranteed and before either can develop the hosts have a less glamorous problem getting two people to talk without doing all the talking themselvesldquoWe abandon questions and change directions all the timerdquo Surbhi saysHer account is of a show continually being revised while it runs Questions give way to the participantsrsquo comfort the audiencersquos mood and the direction a conversation has taken An answer can be more interesting than the question that produced it Continuing with the next prepared question might keep the running order intact while losing the exchangeEven deciding that a conversation decisions rather than occasional emergencies The team reports more than 40 soldout productions across four seasons Each performance uses a recognisable format but the hosts cannot carry one pairrsquos responses into the next showMuch of that work is difficult to see in the clips through which viewers discover the show A short video can preserve the question the answer and the laugh It cannot show an abandoned question that was never asked Nor does a smooth change of subject announce that another direction has just been given up From the audiencersquos side a successful adjustment may look like the planThat is the useful distinction in Surbhirsquos account of improvisation She describes responding to what the participants and the audience can sustain rather than simply finding more things to say The performance includes restraint leaving room for an answer that belongs to somebody elseThe result when it works is less conspicuous than a punchline Two people who had been waiting for the hosts to give them something to discuss begin responding to each other There is finally a conversation for the room to follow and the comedians have to recognise when to let it continue
