Starting his career in Automotive Electronics in 1999, he immersed himself in vehicle networking protocols and their real-world applications. His early work with Controller Area Network (CAN) and CANOpen protocols enabled groundbreaking developments, such as proving that voice transmission was feasible over CAN despite bandwidth limitations. This innovation was recognized internationally when his paper on &ldquo;Voice Over CAN&rdquo; was selected for the International CAN Conference in 2003. Over the years, Suresh has been instrumental in developing and integrating vehicle diagnostics, infotainment, and telematics systems for major automakers, including Ford, GM, Daimler, BMW, JLR, and Honda. His expertise in vehicle communication protocols, including MOST and CAN, has played a key role in advancing the capabilities of modern automotive electronics.
At Harman, since 2021, he has led the integration of cyber-security requirements into car audio programs, ensuring that connected vehicle systems remain resilient against emerging threats. &ldquo;As vehicle connectivity increases, so do the security challenges. It&rsquo;s crucial to embed cyber-security into every layer of vehicle networking to protect against potential vulnerabilities,&rdquo; he explains. His leadership in managing vehicle diagnostics and integrating CAN into multiple programs has facilitated the seamless rollout of software updates and enhanced the reliability of automotive electronic systems.
Throughout his career, he led several high-impact projects. His work spans implementing CAN for OTIS Elevator Systems, developing vehicle diagnostics for Ford&rsquo;s X-Carline infotainment systems, and managing vehicle networking integration for GM and Ford Telematics. His expertise also extends to the development of test automation systems for Honda and Ford, leveraging CAN and MOST communications to enhance validation processes. In recent years, his focus has shifted towards the intersection of cyber-security and automotive networks, ensuring that vehicles are protected against the increasing complexity of cyber threats.
One of the major challenges he encountered was the lack of clear ownership in integrating cyber-security into vehicle software. With expertise spanning CAN, cybersecurity, and software download functionalities, he played a critical role in bridging the gap and driving software development teams toward successful implementation.
