BIS Certification for Furniture

BIS Certification for Furniture

The Department of Commerce and Industry of India (DPIIT) has issued an order making it mandatory for several categories of furniture, whether manufactured in India or imported from other countries, to bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) quality mark and have a valid BIS license. This means that furniture manufacturers, both Indian and foreign, must immediately apply for a BIS license and obtain a valid BIS certification for furniture covered by this order.

This certification covers performance and safety requirements such as strength, stability, rigidity, and durability for various types of furniture for residential and commercial use. BIS certification is granted only to manufacturers, not to dealers or retailers engaged in marketing and distribution. Manufacturers with multiple locations must apply for a BIS license for each production location.
